VIDEO: Starr Parodi's Version of Adagio
on: July 09, 2012, 10:47:07 PM
I'm happy to be the first (that I know of) to post a recording of Starr Parodi's jazz improv version of Adagio in G minor! She is much better known for her James Bond and Kenya pieces, but this one deserves more attention in my opinion.

My performance is not perfect, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I hope you enjoy it.

hey welcome! nice playing and especially nice if you figured this all out by ear.

i'm not familiar w the work so i won't give a treatise on all that is right or not right with it just wanted to welcome you.  hope you stick around and try to contributue and post to other folks' posts rather than simply sign up to post your own recording and that's that (a very common and unfortunate happenance around there here parts).

also, i'd caution you against the temptation that many youtube pianists fall to and you sort of alluded to, the old 'be the first to post' mindset, ive seen this and read about the tendancy in comment threads (i.e. 'you should hurry up and be the first to play _____" ), i think it's silly, who cares just learn it right and play it well.  when did playing our instrument become a race right?  take your time and don't worry about delaying posting a recording until you feel it IS good and ready and you are very happy with it or it is the best you'll be able to give at the time.
hint, i find that if you are having to do multiple multiple takes, i.e. maybe more than 2 times to get a 'decent' one out of it, it's not ready. that's the standard i like to use at least. if my 'hit rate' isn't well above 95% under 'performance' conditions, i'm not done.  set a high standard for yourself and rise to meet it rather than compromise on it in an effort to get an upload sooner than the next guy just to 'get more views' becuase it's the only hit on a seach querry.

sorry than is all. my little rant on the subject has been building for quite some time.

I can tell. I don't think it was necessarily an appropriate response, but I understand your frustrations and since this is a public thread where other more appropriate targets may read, I won't go on one of my own about that. I'll just say this:

I became a member of this forum almost a year ago and this is the first recording I've posted. At that time, I had already been working on this piece for a couple months. It's very simple, and I'm not very good. I had piano lessons from age 7-9 and just got my first piano at age 27. I practiced hours and hours over the last few weeks to move from enjoying playing this piece to the point where I was ready to turn on the camera. But as soon as the camera goes on, I always make new mistakes. Then with each take I get worse. So this is the best recording I'm ever going to get with the amount of work I'm willing and able to put into it.

I'm excited to be the first to post it because I was disappointed to find, what I think is such an awesome song, nearly didn't exist in the internet world. After hearing this song on Pandora a few times I went looking for the sheet music and found none. So I looked for videos of Starr Parodi or other people playing it and found none. So I'm happy to be the first one to expand its presence on the internet. For that reason, I did my best to do it justice and feel I did that as well as I can. I'll never be happy performing anything with mistakes. But realistically, I'm not a concert pianist and have to live with that and leave the expert performances to the experts.

Thank you for the compliments.

no worries man! :D
it was mainly prompted by your comment "I'm happy to be the first ..." so that was my background and so it passed the appropriateness meter based on the info given at the time. apologies again if it came across as beligerant to you in any way form or fashion.
again you should be commended and feel proud of the accomplishment and that you recorded and made it public, most WILL NEVER get there.

as for my treatise on the piano race, apoligies again, it was more a general comment and hopeuflly if someone in the futre reads it and finds it helpful, great. wasn't a knock against you in anyway but since i had little background info, it was a 'just in case this guy, nice as he seems, is rushing to put it out...'

please continue to share your playing with us. this resource is nothing without people putting fourth the effort to make it the great board it is. your contribution is super important.
