Sans Teacher......
on: July 15, 2012, 04:45:43 PM
So in the tiny town in which I live it seems there are no teachers available, particularly for adults, most are kids and even then only a handful in this city. So it's looking like self-instruction is the only way to go.

I'm reading Fundamentals of Piano by Chang and have been surfing the forum bookmarking various post for future reference. I realize there are numerous products out there, but that's part of the problem as well. There are so many it can be difficult to narrow it down or just pick on and get on with it.

So any recommendations for instructional books/dvds that come highly recommended for adult beginners. I will continue to scour the forums in the meantime.

Any feedback greatly appreciated.

Drive to where a teacher is.  There's got to be one within a 1-2 drive.

Chang's mentioned on here but I'd really go with a real pianist or teacher.  I consider Chang "online information."

Find a college or university.

Use one of the kid style teachers in your area.

Online is probably not going to cut it unless you get some online lessons set up.  I've found online things to interesting but... good for generating my own ideas or bouncing ideas off.  Nothing like a regular lesson.

Looks to be pretty much 'kid' teachers in the area. I'll ask around and which are worthwhile contacting. The selection is very limited here, and as such I imagine they're booked with the little ones all day. But I'll look into it. Thanks for the feedback

Proper teachers do offer lessons over Skype.  Here are some examples:

Maybe find someone within a long driving distance and then supplement that with some webcam lessons inbetween.

Hey!

That's a bummer that you don't have a teacher in your town... It's not impossible to teach yourself how to play.  People do it all the time.

Here are a couple of guys to look up on YouTube

Paul Barton
Josh Wright

They both give EXCELLENT tutorials that will greatly help you to improve your playing.  Also recommend learning how to sight read (practice this A LOT!)
