Pieces you hate hearing because you love them
on: July 17, 2012, 07:35:24 AM
The title might not make sense but I got it from a story my father told me. One of his friends is a choral director and so naturally one year my father asked him around Christmas if they were going to perform handel's messiah to which the director said no. When my father asked why, the reply was, "because I love it."
So is there anything that you absolutely love so much that you hate how it's overplayed? Or do you not care if your favorite piece is played ad nausium by every pianist?

Rach 1, Rach 2, and Rach 3

I can't find a recording that makes me happy.  That's why I'm waiting for the love of my life, Valentina Lisitsa, to release her CD!  Hopefully it will satisfy my thirst.

Oh, and Rachmaninoff's 1st sonata!

Valentina I think does a pretty fair job at playing it, but she does this weird change in tempo thing in certain passages and she does it WAAY too much!  And I don't like the piano she plays it on either.  The Bass notes aren't loud enough.

Ravel's Scarbo

Boris Berezovsky does a good job, but someone recorded it with a box of crayons so the quality SUCKS!

Go listen to the Michelangeli bootlegs, I don't think a better recordings of it exist. Horowitz supposedly programmed it back in the 30's, if only he had recorded it...

She's my favorite pianist that's alive, but she's not my favorite of all time.  I would listen to Horowitz or anybody from the golden age any day over her.  As long as the recording has good quality.

But what don't you like about her?

Oh, come on. There must be something even you don't like about her.

Her husband, for example?  :P
