Fingering for maj7th's?
on: July 20, 2012, 08:11:30 PM
What is the fingering for maj7th inversions? I'm surprised I can't find this information anywhere. I've gone with my intuition, but I find Gmaj7th inversions to feel rather odd, particularly Gmaj7th in 3rd inversion with (RH) fingering: 1-2-3-5. So, I want to ensure I'm not practicing them incorrectly.
All help is appreciated.

Well, you probably are doing them just fine (as long your teacher hasn't noticed anything). You can use different fingering for the same chord depending on the context. I get the awkward feeling, though. I find that the minor second in those chord can feel very awkward at first. Just keep your hands relaxed and keep playing them. Eventually they won't feel weird anymore and you'll be fine.

The min 2nds is exactly what is awkward about the chord. Thanks for the tip!

I hope you mean what I think you mean. (as in I hope I don't write non-related nonsense)
If you do, try playing the keys a minor second apart with just one finger (e.g. thumb on c and d at the same time, 2 and 5 for the other ones). That did the trick for me.
