College piano
on: July 24, 2012, 04:02:36 AM

Does anyone have recommendations about amount and type of repertoire I should have when I start music school this fall? (besides "everything")
Some composer/piece suggestions? I don't think I will get to be picky too much.
How bout experiences from music school? What did you study when you got in and before you got out?

Thanks!

Well, everyone usually studies pieces based on their strengths and weaknesses.

In my case, I had to pretty much cram as much as possible in order to get into college and I got in under probation  :(

I do suggest a continuous study of Bach Prelude and Fugues, and a consistent stream of Scarlatti Sonatas on the side!  (I think these are great for controlled technique, and meticulous work on finger dexterity and accuracy, if only I did it back then   :o)
A Chopin Etude per semester(if it addresses something you need of course!), and during winter/summer breaks!

Piano Concertos, if you haven't already!  Saint-Saens 2, Rach 1, Mendelssohn 1, Grieg 1, if your school has concerto competitions!

My First Semester consisted of
Bach Prelude and Fugue No. 6 in dm from WTCII
Beethoven Sonata in fm, Op. 2, No. 1, 1st movement
Rachmaninoff Prelude No. 6 in EbM, Op. 23 No. 6
wow, I think that was it.

Learned in my last year (with exception of the prelude and fugue) and senior recital consisted of
Bach Prelude and Fugue No. 6 in dm from WTCII  :o
Chopin Ballade No. 2 in FM, Op. 38
Ravel Miroirs, IV - Alborada Del Gracioso
Beethoven Piano Sonata in BbM, Op. 22
Ginastera Piano Sonata No. 1, Op. 22
