Help me pick a sonata from Beethoven, Mozart, or Haydn
on: August 22, 2012, 10:01:55 AM
Hi
I'm a 1st year music major and this is my 1st time posting here. Currently, I'm learning Beethoven sonata op 28 (Pastoral) as one of the pieces for my end-of-year recital. The question is, which sonata should I learn next (maybe I'll learn it during December holiday)?
I think I have to learn some Mozart or Haydn with my teacher, cos somehow I think they're essential to learn, like Bach. I like Beethoven, but almost everyone in my con is doing his sonatas. Not many people seem to play Mozart Schubert or Haydn.... Which composer is good to learn next? And which sonata is good for my current level? (based on the pieces I'm working on right now)

You learn sonatas in preparation for your next 2 years.
If you want to play Mozart and Haydn sonata in your 2nd and 3rd year, then pick a sonata from both those composers.
Since I've got a music degree myself, I would learn one Mozart and Haydn sonata because you have to play sonatas in all years studying music.
The ones I played for my end of year for 3 years
Beethoven Sonata - Op2 No1, Op10 No2
Mozart Sonata - k332
Otherwise, listen to recordings and pick the one that sounds the best to you.
