on: October 10, 2004, 08:42:19 AM
I like this piece a lot and am having trouble finding it, or at least an expressional recording.
Any suggestions?

Thanks. :)

I got a recording of Evgeny Kissin playing it, and I must say it's the BEST!

I think theres a good recording of La Campanella by Yundi Li.  He plays it so steady and even.  If you want, add me in msn, johnjwong@hotmail.com and i can send the mp3 to u and if you want even the video to u.

Bolet's is a little boring - brilliant and shimmering, as Bolet usually is, I find his Campnella a little mechanical.
I think this is one Marc Andre Hamlin does well, (yeah, I know he's usually mechanical, but he really knows this one) however, my favorite recording is Mischa Dichter's, but sadly I seem to have lost it..

There is a "Best of Liszt" cd on amazon.com that he performs with "la campanella" on it.  My copy should be shipping soon. ;)

Cziffra's is my favorite so far. It sounds like a second person is doing the trills in the middle section for him.  :o

I have Kissin's DVD (Gift of Music), Cziffra CD, Yundi Li CD, and Nikita Magaloff CD versions.  All of them are impressive in their own ways until you hear Kissin's live video recording.  Even though he slipped in at least one section, it is so much better than the others.

I just received the Misha Dichter recording, and well, he performs the weakest version of "La Campanella" I have heard yet.  It is almost like a robot playing it very lightly.  I'm disappointed.  The rest of the cd is ok, but makes me wonder how much better the other tracks might be at the hands of someone else, like say Jano Jando, who's version is on www.naxos.com under Composers>Liszt>Instrumental>Best of Liszt.  He plays my favorite version thus far.

I don't Like Kissin
neither his studio nor the one live, he pushes himself too far in the video, it's not even graceful anymore.

I like Cziffra (live)
Iganz Friedman (busoni)
Yundi Li(the live video is even better)
Andre Watts
John Ogdon(live in Tch competition, the busoni)
Lhevinne (in my opinion captures the feeling of little waltz the best)

and sometimes Hofmann too.
