No wonder the US is slipping down the education tables!
I know you're kidding, but the real reason our education
isn't as good as it could be sucks is because it's basically impossible to get fired as a public school teacher unless you abuse a student. Like, sexually. Verbal abuse is fine. Physical abuse...generally not okay, but there has to be proof. As far as sexual abuse goes, if someone even hints that a teacher did anything that was even remotely beyond a strict teacher-student relationship, even without proof, you're out. Which is actually unfortunate, because many teachers, especially male, are afraid to form connections with their students because of how much they'd be screwed over if a kid lied or even made a joke in front of the wrong person about the teacher abusing them.
Anyway, the teachers also have degrees in education, since it's required to be hired, which doesn't really make any sense, because being a good teacher has more to do with personality, knowledge in the subject you're teaching, and a desire to actually be a good teacher than it does with an education...makes more sense to have the teachers get a degree in whatever they're going to teach. And then there's the problem that teachers get switched around like crazy. Half the foreign language teachers I know of in the public high schools in my town didn't know anything about the language they were teaching until after they started teaching it (and even then, don't know very much).
And then there's the problem of motivation. Young teachers come to schools, full of ideals, wanting to make a difference in children's lives and all that, and it's stomped out immediately because of the way things are run. Going above and beyond to get students encouraged in a subject is often actively discouraged. It's more about adhering strictly to a terrible curriculum than actually teaching students.
And after all these problems (and tons more), people blame it on lack of money into the schools. I went to a private high school where their budget per student was about half that in most public schools, and I got a tons better education than most people from public schools in my town.
But yeh, you gotta watch out for dem haters. Everyone thought I was gay for a while a few years ago, which led to some seriously irritating bullying, I guess you'd call it. Generally not physical, never got beaten up, but I got shoved around a bit and was generally harassed. I guess people insecure about the size of their manhood have to let it out somehow, right?
