yamaha G2 (5'8") vs Petrof (6'8")
on: February 04, 2003, 10:54:52 PM
Please help me! I can't decide.
I like both grand pianos.
The yamaha G2 is selling for 3,500 (sterling pounds), but the owner does not know how old it is. It does not have 3 pedals, but 2. and it looks like it's about 30 yrs old. This is sold by an opera singer who used it at her house for rehearsals. Can I verify the age of the grand from the serial no. Do any of you know how?
The Petrof is selling for 5,800 (sterling pounds), and is 5 yrs old. It's sold by a shop, so I figured they are in for the business. I like both, but since I might have to consider it's re-sale value, which would you most likely consider buying?
help,
wagner (in dilemna)

Dear Wagner,
I would go for the Petrof although it is more expensive.
A 6'8" grand piano will be better than a 5'8" grand of similar age, condition and quality. The bass response of the longer grand will certainly be richer and more powerful.
Secondly, the Petrof is an almost new piano and if the Yamaha is about 30 years old you could have a piano that will be needing new hammers and re-stringing which is very expensive.
The prices for both pianos seem moderate relative to their age and condition and with such a precious investment as a piano it is not wise to cut corners financially. The Petrof seems to me not only the better piano but a bargain as well.
Once you have made the purchase it is so disappointing to have something that you are not happy with.
Very good luck...
Robert.
