Which of these Schubert Pieces?
on: September 01, 2012, 03:52:47 PM
Hi,
I really want to play a Schubert piano piece.
So I listended to some recordings and I really like lot of them.
-Impromptu: Op. 142 No 1/3/4
-Sonata: All
-Three Piano Pieces D. 946
My problem is I don't know which is playable for me and I don't really want to have watch every score.
Currently I have vocation and my teacher isn't 'here'.
I already played some easy Chopin pieces (Waltzes, Preludes, Mazurkas, Noctunre Op.55 No1 in Fb), Mozart Fantasie 1 in d minor,
Beethoven Op 27. no. 2 only 1st,2nd Movement.
So could you give me suggestion which of these are would suitable for me? I will check them out.
Thanks in advance.

I applaud you for taking the time to explore and discover new music for yourself. Now to the questions you posed:
Yes, I think you can definitely tackle D. 946. Most people are more familiar with Impromptus D. 90, in comparison to D. 142. I personally think D. 142 is harder, esp. 1, 3, and 4. Maybe you can check out D. 90? But I do adore D. 142.
Regarding sonatas: aren't they precious? Some are technically and musically more demanding than others. There are so many I can recommend, but if you have not played any of his sonatas, then perhaps you can try some of these: D. 279 (virtually unknown, early, but rewarding), D. 537, D. 559 (unknown, but I think is his easiest one, beside D. 157), D. 664 (very popular), or D. 845.
Have fun, and let us know what you think.

Hi,
thanks for reply.
I will give D.946/1 and D279 a try.
PS: Do you mean D557 instead of D559?

A good place to start with Schubert are the Moments Musicaux. Quite lovely, and a good introduction to his thinking.

I did mean D. 557, Sonata in A-flat major. Not played, quite easy, but less musically rewarding.
