I've always wanted to learn the piano but can't afford one right now. I'm considering buying a keyboard? I've got a 1000 dollar budget. Can I get a good one with that amount of money? And if I play the keyboard,I technically play the piano, right? Can I learn how to play the keyboard by using books...etc. Or do I need a teacher? I know nothing about music.
Thank you in advance :)
Please be informative, any answers are appreciated.

Btw,just wondering, how long would it take to know how to play some songs? Like Time by Hans Zimmer for example? I'm willing to spend an hour a day practicing on school nights and 6 hours on the weekend.

You should try to find a used digital piano, not an electronic keyboard.  With your budget, you should be able to find a decent used digital.

Why do you want to play the piano?  What music do you want to play?  Pop? Classical? Jazz?
The answer to this will shape the direction of your musical learning experience.  You can learn music theory (how to read the stave, key signatures, etc.) from books for any style of music.  Start there.  It's cheaper than a teacher but will take more time.

If you start with improvisation, you'll be able to play something very quickly and you'll develop a skill that isn't taught to most classical music students.
