Suggested Editions of WTC?
on: September 02, 2012, 07:20:29 PM
Right now I currently have the dover edition of the Well Tempered Clavier, but I want to get another, better edition of it. The dover one is really compacted, (both books crammed into just one book) and doesn't really have any fingering written in it. Do any of you have suggestions on which may possibly be a better edition that I could order?

thank you

I recently bought the henle edition of both books (in 2 actual books), and I think it's very well done, nicely readable, and also has (most of the time) useful fingerings and hints when notes from the top staff should be played with the left hand. Also the blue, simplistic cover is just a joy to look at in my opinion.

Bärenreiter.  Comes in two volumes.  Excellent sewn binding, and off-white paper.  Engraving is top-notch.

I find however Vol 2 more pleasant to look at than Vol 1.  Somehow it seems Vol 1 was printed slightly smaller.  Vol 2 seems less crammed.  At least in the copies I have.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

No, it's not printed smaller.  The staves are not uniform in size depending on the piece.  Some pieces are smaller; others are larger, supposedly to fit the music cleanly onto the page.  Check it again and you'll see that both volumes vary in size depending on the PrldnFg.

And I also prefer the Baerenreiter because it is more cleanly spaced and easier to read.  The Henle noteheads are a bit on the big side to be able to read contrapuntally and it can be a bit difficult to tell which voice is which because the noteheads take up so much space.
