Top 10 Composers (pointless list time!)

If you like Telemann, then you're the one who's obviously been putting something in his water.  Is it Valium?  Without Telemann, Bach would not have existed as we know him.  Bach had very, very little impact on music before Mendelssohn began popularizing him, and it wasn't until toward the last third of the Romantic Era that he was well-known.  His impact on music has been quite minimal; by the time he was well-known enough, people were writing music that has no use of Bach.  What is so hard to understand?

Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin were all influenced by Bach. Mozart and Beethoven admittedly later in their careers, but that is, after all, when they did their most interesting work. Still, if you ignore those.....

I am sorry but you are way of. By the way, it does not surprise me that you did not get what I meant with "with your way of reasoning, why not put Jesus and God himself on the list?".. You say that without Telemann, Bach would not have existed as we KNOW him, I say, if Bach did not believe in Jesus and God, he wouldn't have existed as we know him. It's just pathetic to say that Telemann is more important than Bach because he influenced Bach. I mean, if you think Telemann is so important, why do you even bring Bach up? Bach created a new language, and inspired many of the greatest composers after him. Beethoven set up new rules, and he was at such a higher level of artistry than all others, that it was almost impossible not to be influenced by him.

I only wandered into this site looking for a score for the intermezzo op. 118 number 6. However, I was irresistably drawn to the prospect of making a pointless list, so here it is (in no particular order):

Byrd, Bach, Wagner, Saint-Saens, Hindemith, Haydn, Purcell, Beethoven, Brahms, Stanford.

Honorable mentions go to Scriabin, Chausson, Bruckner, Rameau, Strauss (R), Langlais, Ockeghem, Schubert, Gibbons and (running out of space here) Leos Frederick-Valentine von Vaughn-Lambert.

And yes, I could live without mozart.

Pretty basic composers for me.  Beethoven and Bach are pretty much a tie.

9. Cramer

I am mostly familiar with Cramer from the Diabelli Variations by Beethoven.  Cramer was the only contemporary pianist that Beethoven admired.  The 23rd Diabelli is a parody on Cramer's Pianoforte-method - specifically the very first study.  I still laugh every time I hear this variation.

For me, Beethoven and Stravinsky are the 2 great composers with the greatest sense of humor expressed in their music.

This piece got me into Cramer. It has Mozart-like ideas but also has an original mold - not too innovative but dropping in Romantic aspects here and there. Really amazing stuff.

Haha you "snuck in" many composers! I was also considering putting Ravel, Copland, or Gershwin in there but decided Brahms earned a higher spot.

Haha - so you sneak it in now.  I would put Ravel in my top 15.  Absolutely love his piano concerto for LH alone and some of his solo piano music and his string quartet.
