Do you.....
on: September 15, 2012, 08:18:37 PM
Look at advertisements of pianos being sold? I just got my first piano and I feel kind of guilty looking at other pianos for sale. Or is it normal to be looking at other pianos and their prices, perhaps just for the fun of it? Checking the prices, condition and such?

This is probably going to sound stupid, but I have this image of a black yamaha grand piano in a house I will hopefully own in the future.

haha ... I can empathize!  No, I do not look at other pianos, but it's not because I feel guilty!  I just know there's not even the remotest possibility to have a different one at the time (unless I downgrade - which is even complicated in itself!) and I know how my mind works.  Do I want a Steinway?  Of course.  Do I want a Bosendorfer?  Of course.  Do I want a Fazioli?  Of course.  Do I want a bunch of other pianos, some quality war horses, sitting around my house?  Sure, yes, of course!  In fact, I even had a dream the other night that my brother brought me 6 more grand pianos ... ahhh ... I will remember it so nicely ... they were just sitting all around like I was a piano store or so :).  Not that I want a piano store :).  Actually, I've had more dreams like that, too.  I've had dreams of rooms just absolutely filled with all sorts of pianos ...  :)

Dreams are what life is made out of ( given the gift of reasonable health and intelligence). Without dreams there is no future you are stuck in the present, yet with time passing you bye. Make any sense ?

You are young, plan your life to fulfill your dreams, if you meet or surpass a good bunch of them you have had a great life ! A black Yamaha grand piano in your life and in your own house is doable. If you never work to meet a good part of your dreams you probably are having a miserable life. Work toward your dreams through goals. Now and then stick your neck out but not so as to get it lobbed off.

Edit:

I don't look too closely at new pianos. my grand works pretty well and if I get to looking at nice new pianos I might actually come home with one. The problem is it will have a mortgage attached to it !!!!! I was in the local piano store about 6 weeks ago in fact, I walked right past new Baldwins and rebuilt this and that's to buy my roll of piano wire for the string I popped in my grand. In talking with the lady there, she asked what my piano was, I told her the Henry F Miller. She said those are great pianos, her husband likes rebuilding them , they are built strong they last for ever, not like these new ones ! Out of her mouth not mine, don't shoot the messenger.
Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.

You'll get your grand one day if you stick to piano  :)

I do "window shopping" all the time...I'm fascinated with pianos as instruments. I wish I could have at least 5  ;D

My dream is to be able to buy old pianos and learn to work on them... That dream maybe doable when I retire, won't have time or room in my apartment but in the summer place maybe...

Yeah and to think I'm thinking of all that when I only have a console upright, haha.

Yeah, never buy something you can't afford; God knows how much trouble I would be in if I had gotten one of those 2k/3k pianos at the shop I visited.

I think all pianos are great in the eyes/hands of the owner. It's entirely possible that one might not like a Steinway while Loving a Kawai for example.

YEAH! I want to do that one day too! Like, dedicate an entire room to piano mechanics. Have a few there I can work on and such.

The piano is one awesome piece of craftmenship!

Speaking of which, did your piano get tuned yet ?

The tuner should have done it last week, but he was at his daughter's school performance or something like that. He made a mistake with the date. We made a new appointment and he should be here tomorrow. I do wonder what his opinion will be regarding the hammers.

I'll definitely let you know though! :)

The piano is one awesome piece of craftsmanship!

I'd suggest just starting with some simple touch up tuning between professional tunings and work on from there. Maybe eventually pick up a fixer upper grand piano for fairly cheap money. Hopefully one with a decent pin block in it but otherwise needs some work. The pin block's a big nut to take on.

I don't care for working on uprights personally, grand are more accessible.

I do randomly walk into piano shops to see what is new.  Looking at piano ads can only do so much, I'd prefer to play them ;D

No current plans to obtain a new piano for me, but I like to keep ontop of what is available.  Every so often someone may ask me my opinion of where to find good pianos and such.  It's helpful to have somewhat current knowledge of the local piano market.  It's also an excuse to look for Bosies  ;)
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
