Good Download/Virtual Drive Sites
on: October 02, 2012, 12:00:55 AM
I'm looking for suggestions for good virtual drive sites.  I used to have 4shared, which
I was very pleased with until I discovered that anyone who downloaded from my drive had access to make changes in my account, upgrade my account, etc., which was ridiculous.  That wasn't the only problem.  But I really enjoyed having that.

I would appreciate any suggestions. :)

box.com?

Dropbox left everyone's account open last year for about four hours.

If there's anything confidential or work-related... You don't know where that stuff is saved and don't have complete control over, over who has access to it, over where it might end up, etc.  And if the business decides to shut down, you're stuck.

But if you don't care and it doesn't matter if the information is released or someone somewhere looks over it....

Google Docs or Google Drive now I think is another one.

i use several for various reasons, so far google drive is my favorite. the best controls and security and 5gb for free (you can buy more but you can also just use mutiple emails , i have three so 15 gb so far for free).

mediafire is very userfriendly and i have no complaints from it, i have a few of those and they come in handy.

scribd isn't a hosting stie per say as a 'drive' but for documents there are some cool privacy /control features and i have yet to come across upload limits on file size (and i have attempted w very largd PDF files).

for powerpoints i use slide share.

just depends what you're after but there's some great free stuff out there 8)

I had a pretty bad experience with Google Drive myself. It began randomly deleting files..granted they went into my recycle bin so I didn't really lose those files, but it was annoying as hell and I switched to Dropbox. I have it synced to my work computer, my home computer, and have super important files backed up separately on each computer as well adn on a thumb drive. The only true protection against data loss is redundancy.

Take a look at the Oracle site and read there white paper on cloud computing.

One rule everyone seems to ignore is that free is not free. There is a reason why anyone would offer you free storage. Google tends to scan everything you do and save (it's in their fine print) for opportunities to sell you something.

It's very cheap to set up your own. It's not like the old days where you had to have a degree in computer science to make it work.
