Schumann - everything expect the Piano Concerto and the Eintritt from Waldszenen
Mozart - most of his piano works apart from the D minor Fantasy and K457
Chopin - Nocturne Op 9 No 2, not a bad piece but I just don't see why it's the most popular Nocturne
Debussy - Claire de Lune, again by no means a bad piece but he wrote many better things

I can't say it sucks... but I'm not really fond of Mozart's piano music.  Everyone drools over it, but I find it kinda lame to listen to!

Schumann's great!  What are people saying?!  Again, he has some bad works (as do all composers!), but his Fantasy, the song cycles, and the piano concerto are amazing!  Carnavale people!!

Interested in discussing:

-Prokofiev Toccata
-Scriabin Sonata 2

This may be sooo biased, but I'm just going to say it.

Chopin's Revolutionary Etude, Op 10/12.

I regret putting so much time in learning it in the first place. Definitely not worth the effort. I was so sick of hearing it that I just threw it away a couple months ago. I haven't thought of it until now.

It's nice to hear at first, since it's so exciting and explosive, but after practicing it (or any other piece for that matter) for too long, it just loses its spark.

Eh, maybe that spark will come back some day. It is what drew me into learning the piano in the first place.

And j_menz, I don't think I need to worry about that. Everyone knows that I'm pretty incompetent overall already.  ;D

well...I will say I do not enjoy Mozart, but I disagree about the Beethoven, everything by Beethoven RULES!!! I forgot I am supposed to have Beethoven Fridays when I am not working on a piece by him already. Who wants to join? I can't think of anything else I do not enjoy at least a little bit. There's just not enough sorrow in Mozart's music.

Rachmaninoff prelude, Op. 3 No. 2

Now you've made me feel bad for starting to learn this prelude. I've recently discovered how awesome Rachmaninoff's music is, and this is one of his more accessible works.

Plus it's a great anger release piece.  :P

Almost every Beethoven sonata actually.
But that tells quite a lot about my inadequacy, since to be honest I don't know which ones people seem to love, except the couple of the most obvious like the above mentioned, Pathétique (doesn't the name say it all?) and Appassionata.

I too lack the ability to appreciate boring music...

Can we just agree that whatever is said in this thread will stay in it and never mentioned in again in another?

Oh, I think I was unclear. Chopin's music uses a lot of repetition, but I think it holds together very well.

I don't think Chopin could go back in time and somehow influence Beethoven's compositions.

I wish he could have gone back and do that for a couple of others too. Then again he was really into Mozart so I guess it would have been little help...

Haha, you've never romped through the repertoire in your life! A good romp always starts with a fugue.

But you do remind me that I've stopped romping for a bit, so signature changed.

exactly! (sort of), why does hardly anyone around here (seriously I can read daily and probably see this mentioned 1-3 times if at all in a year) not ever play, discuss, recall, etc  one of the greatest composers of all time/the baroque, who happened to write quite a bit of fantastic music accessible to us!?

Handel! coincidentally I am looking t georgy for my next baroque work after my romp with a bach sinfonia i am about to wrap up.

really,he should be explored, his suites in particular are quite outstanding

here is the f minor p& f (one of my favorite keys for these things), considering this as my sinfonia is also in f minor so have some momentum on this key so i'm quite comfortable with it, it will be hard enough to effectively manage four voices in a the fugue without an uncomfortable key siggy

richter and gavrilov thought he was worth the hassle....

ok, sorry for the off topic. i just love this music and when it took stock of how often (or really better said, how little) he is discussed or played around here I was a little shocked.

on music that peole seem to like a lot and that i don't quite understand why, lots of liszt's works, in particular those before his 'late period' (those in the late part of his life i actually love, a lot, but early stuff like the etudes, many of the hung. rhap.s, etc, i don't understand the fascination ::))

As for something serious: Bartok's Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion

I'm sorry, people who love this, I just cannot wrap my mind around this piece. I love most Bartok, but I hear this is the peak of his compositions? meeeh. It is certainly very interesting, I'll give it that.

Almost every Beethoven sonata actually.

Most of the pieces mentioned, I can see where the users are coming from. This, however, I cannot understand.  :'(

Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges.
