rapid repeated notes
on: October 16, 2004, 02:00:31 PM
There is a passage in a Ligeti etude I'm working on that offers an interesting difficulty.  At a tempo of quarter=132, I need to play repeated sixteenth notes on the fifth finger of the left hand.  Has anybody ever encountered something like this before?  If so, how did you surmount it?  I can approach tempo, about quarter=110-120, but can't quite reach it.

You have to alternate fingers on the key.  I doubt it can only be done with only finger 5 at that speed.  If you have your other fingers free, then you have to alternate your fingers.

Depending on how many repeated notes, try 54321 |:4321:|.

Try vibrating your arm

Thanks for the suggestions.  Yeah, the only way I can achieve the tempo I do (still too slow) is through a combination of rotating and vibrating the arm.  The only other finger I might be able to bring into play is the fourth finger, because my thumb at the same time is also striking notes.  I'll go try some of your suggestions now.

Comme,

My earlier numbers were somewhat mistaken.  I just went and tried tapping my desk with a metronome counting, about the fastest tempo I got on the fifth finger alone was 100 bpm.  Try it, perhaps you'll suprise yourself.  You just need to loosen up your muscles.

I think it just needs practice,  because with rotating and vibrating,  I can get the 140,  and with finger movement I can get to 120.
