Looking for a Yamaha Upright Piano

Hello,

My parents are thinking on purchasing an upright piano (we don't have enough space for a grand one).  I told them that the only conditions were that the piano:

-Has to be Yamaha
-Has to be black.

I suppose those options are shallow, but Yamaha has been very flexible for me and the black colour is nice.

I want to know if I need to give more conditions when we go to check the piano.  Until now, we checked a LU90, I found it fine.  However, I checked more models of Yamaha and I cannot find the LU90 model in the Yamaha web page.

Could you suggest more models so we cannot be fooled?

This is kind of a funny question. Yamaha make a variety of upright models, which vary in price and their quality. The difference, IMO, between the cheaper and more expensive models is marked.

From what I can see the LU90 is an obsolete model which was one of their cheaper models. Made in Indonesia. If you find a good dealer they can explain the differences between a cheap model and the more expensive ones. The yamaha website gives quite a good indication itself of the differences, in a euphemistic way.

 In this country their is quite a market in very good quality second hand pianos from Japan. I have a U3 of this type. Although it is old, 30 years now, I enjoy its tone and touch very much.

I would definitely look for a used one made in japan.
The cheap, new ones made in indonesia are garbage. I've tested maybe like 20 or so different of their cheap models and they all sounded and felt so unbelievably bad. Also I was told that after about 5 to 10 years you can pretty much throw them away because some of their small, yet important parts are made of plastic and when they break (that would be after about 5-10 years) it's practically impossible to repair the damage. And also they can't hold their tuning because they get built in a climate with high humidity (indonesia) by people who don't know much more about pianos than you or I do.

I would keep my hands off of any piano built in indonesia (and china aswell for that matter).

Ops, now it's too late.

My family has already bought it. It's a Ju109 PE.

I don't know if there is still time to take it back. We have 15 days before the piano comes to my house.

My father will be furious if I tell him that I have changed of mind, specially because I told him that it was ok.

I would like to take it backwards.

If you like it, that's the main thing. If its new it should have a 10 year warranty.
And if that's the price point you were looking at, then its probably a good choice.
 It will be fine. Have lots of fun with it.

I have a U3 and it's served me very well.

Each piano will vary and Yamaha have a bunch of different models, but imo as long as you stick with the Hamamatsu factory built ones, you're going to be getting a quality instrument.

Of course, should still scrutinise them etc. :3
