Marrakech Prelude
on: November 19, 2012, 03:12:31 PM
I recently premiered my Prelude for Piano at the Conservatoire in Marrakech.  It received a wonderful reception!  I feel it's an ideal piece for both professionals and students and I'd like to distribute it free with the hope that it becomes a part of your repertoire and your audiences can enjoy it.  It's available for print out in PDF format at https://bruceroter.com/Prelude.pdf

If you like it, please stay in touch.  All best!

First of all, the prelude looks quite interesting so well done!

If I may, I'd like to offer some suggestions for the score itself...

1. You don't need measure numbers in both staves. Delete them from the second staff.
2. The 1st measure, doesn't usually have a measure number. It IS No. 1 by default so there's no need to place it there. And, you should note that since your first measure is NOT what you label as "1" because it's an upbeat (the last 8th of the bar), it should be "0"
3. Dynamics go in the middle of the two staves, but tempo markings (tempo, a tempo, rit, etc) go ABOVE the two staves.
4. The first bar (the upbeat one) is quite long, in comparison to that poor little, single note in it. Find a way to reduce its length.
5. I know that it seems to make sense, but officially, every bar in the left hand is missing an 8th rest. If you cross-staff it like you do most of the times it's ok (still wrong, but makes sense anyhow), but bar 47 or 51, for example are truly missing a rest there.
6. Don't put 'simile' for the legato. Just put the legato there. While it makes sense, it also seems a bit lazy.
7. The tie in the right hand should be turned upside-down (the curve to be upwards), cause right now it's too cramped there.
8. Most of your dynamics are placed in the end of each bar, rather than the beginning, which is a bit peculiar at best. It's not 'wrong' per se, but why exactly?
9. Bar 32-33 has a C# tied, and the sharp in both Cs (which is wrong. The second one should not have the sharp).

That's about it.

I didn't check the notes themselves so there could be some things there as well...

I hope the above doesn't sound or seem harsh. I think that a better looking score will be better for everyone! And perhaps you could offer up a recording as well? It would be well received I think!

Best,

Nikolas
