Rachmaninov: From Moment musicaux
on: November 30, 2012, 09:30:30 PM
So this is a part of what I've done the last 6 weeks. Prokofiev second sonata, some etudes, Brahms op 10... But this is what I will play in a class concert in a week.

So yeah, I've worked on this for about 6 weeks. This was the first time I played through everything, so, naturally, there are more wrong notes that usual. But I hope you can get passed the wrong notes.
The "Feeling" isn't quite there either. I know where to take time, and stuff, but it doesn't really come from inside yet.

So ya, this is more of a try out, to see how it works, now a week before.

Comments are, as always, welcome.

As a representative of the average audience, I can say that your performance is excellent. I liked especially yoyr rendition of the 3° Moment (IMO the most diffucult one to interpret) and of the 4°, bringing out its musical content instead of its 'show off' character. Bravo!

Rachmaninov: From Moment musicaux

You've managed to move me with some very Lazar-Berman-like voicing, sound quality, balance at times, which is probably the best compliment you can get from me. Of course, there are tricks of the trade to make it even more "Russian". If you have a chance, you should also come and visit the countryside around Ivanovka, southeast of Moscow, where Rachmaninov loved to spend time off.

Thanks to both of you for commenting :)

Costicina: I actually find the first one the most difficult. Don't quite know why yet.

P2u: Wow, thanks :D

You're welcome. If I may, in the E minor piece, for the heavy, repeatedly heard ff and fff octave basses overall, I'd suggest less accelaration, more mass (think zombie bells of death, not cannon ball gunshots). Take your time to deliver them as intended.

Since it was recorded on a live performance, so there are some nerves in there. Last time I tried the piano, before this, was sometime in may. That brought both some bad and some good things.

It's my first Rachmaninov, at the embarrassing age of 23, and I worked with it for less than 2 months. So I'm quite happy of how it turned out.

This is marvelous playing!  As part of your interpretations, I'm most impressed by your bringing out the voice leading, voicing of melodic elements, and attention to clarity.  Very nice nuances too. You have a formidable technique that serves your musical aims very well.  Most importantly, you manage very effectively to put a piece over to your listener.

If you use the same recorder as used for parts 1-4, I'd suggest that you boost your volume input level.  I had to turn my speaker volume all the way up to hear them.
