Roland HP307: reasonable price?
on: December 01, 2012, 01:03:08 AM
If I can pull the financing together, I may be able to get a new Roland HP307 for around $3000.
There's room to negotiate. What might be a reasonable price for a new one? I know they were discontinued back in Jan '12 or so.

I played a FP7F a few days ago and really liked it. I understand that's the same as the HP307.

Thanks.

PianoWorld.com has a listing of actual prices paid by contributors on that forum.

For the HP307, here's the list:
Mar-2010  $3700
Mar-2010  $3600
Jun-2010  $3900
Jul-2010  $3063
Aug-2010  $4199
Sep-2010  $3199
Feb-2011  $3199
Feb-2011  $3199
Aug-2011  $3600
So $3000 would have been a best price while this was a current model.
If, as you say, it's been discontinued, you might negotiate a slightly lower price.

Here's the same kind of information for the FP7F:
Oct-2010  $1999
Nov-2010  $2200
Dec-2010  $1795
Jan-2011  $1659
Jan-2011  $1750
May-2011  $1615
May-2011  $1615
Oct-2011  $1350
Jan-2012  $1699
Mar-2012  $1699

He's sticking at $3000 plus $100 shipping.
He claims that as a new model the MSRP was over $6000.
Not sure that's accurate, but it makes the piano out of my reach.

Guess you'll have to look for something else. The good news is these days there isn't any shortage of options !
Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.

You should be able to get a brand new HP-505 for the same price. I would prefer the newer HP-505 then. While sound and keyboard are the same, it has technical advantages, besides the better pedal electronics it is better prepared for the future, in my opinion. The disadvantages of the 505 in comparison to the 307 is the not as bombastic loud speaker system, but I would say that this is not such strong argument as the electronic advantages of the 505.
Decide if you need to be prepared for the future and for that case go for a 505. If you don´t need to think about the future, but just want that perfect keyboard action for a good price, then check what your dealer wants for a 503, and take this as the todays value of a new 307. You should not go for the 503, though, just use it for calculating the 307 price in order to get it clearly cheaper than a 505.
