what would this be considered

For entering in competitions, would Feinberg's eighth sonata be considered Romantic or Modern? It would be an interesting thing to enter under Romantic.

You're probably right. Perhaps if I wanted to enter an unusual Romantic piece in a comp, I could do some Alkan.
