Ebay Items
on: October 18, 2004, 07:23:02 AM
Dear all,

Have you ever bought any memoribilia stuff like photographs, concert ads, concert booklets, autographs of famous conductors, pianists or violinist on EBay?

Are they fake or genuine items? Anyone any experieces from bidding there or heard about it?

Thanks

Zhiliang

you have to be careful on Ebay. I personally don't bid on memorabilla items as there really isn't any guarantee of authenticity. I'd stick to buying cds and dvds if i were you.

Btw watchout for this italian guy who has been trying to sell "rare" Horowitz, Volodos scores for 40+ euros, scores that are widely available for free on the net. This douche also tries to sell mp3s of les introuvables de Cziffra for 400 Euros.

you have to watch yourself especially if you see heaps of things you want, but for me its really cheap compared to buying from cd stores. I mean i would spend up to $300 each time i visited one (all classical cd store). I would've to spent much less if i'd bought my cds from Ebay from the beginning. You just gotta be aware of the sellers track history by reading the feedback etc.

Hi Tashs_Tiara

Yes, yes i somehow feel it too.... I am not surprised your friend became hooked...

There is this autograph of Leonard Bernstein that i was interested in at Ebay. There is a pic attached of it. And there is another autograph also of Leonard Bernstein selling for about USD 180 or so. And this Ebay item is only starting at USD 3 plus. I went to check the signiture and tried to compare both and they looked so different. Weird, could a person sign really differently at a different time? The difference may be years, i am not sure about that. But the Ebay one comes with a certificate of authenticity from a well respected authentic autograph company called PSA/DNA. I went to this PSA/DNA website and sure enough, the seach for the certificate number turns out that the signiture is deemed as authentic though they cannot be 100% correct all the time.

All this seems very puzzling to me.... I mean i can choose to be naive and just buy it and tell myself that the item is authentic and not signed by just another guy who prints out the item from somewhere. But, another way, is it will mean a lot to me, this thing.... So i am troubled by it.

You mean your friend even didnt get some of the stuff she paid for already? Oh dear...

Zhiliang

Hi Brewtality,

Yeah, i have happened to bid on some cd items. This is my first time doing it. My local online Auction in Singapore is ok, as we get to meet the guy and see the goods before paying. But over at Ebay, we have to pay with our credit cards first.

There are some stories that the comments given by buyers, some are fake. There was this guy with a perfect track record, i read that everything about him is perfect. And he got like 40 over pages of great comments and i went to the alst few pages, and i saw that there were repeatedly the same fellow giving the same good comments over and over again in the same day and the time difference was like a few minutes. Just like this fellow felt that the items he got was so good that he bothered to spend his whole day sitting there just sending the same old good comment over and over again.

Am i too suspicious? How was your experience in getting the cds on Ebay?

Regards,

Zhiliang

yeah i can see how you'd be suspicious, im also an ebay noob. I've only bought 3 things so far. I got my Lhevinne cd after like one week but haven't got my other cds yet. Its annoying that most of the stuff is from the US because it can mean that the postage is as much as the cd! I suppose if they never turned up id be upset (esp since i'm dying to hear Gilels Brahms 2nd) but i sorta hedge by not spending alot. I wouldn't buy anything over $100 over ebay (unless its something that i really need/want) just in case the seller's trying to con me

Yeah, everything seems to be from the US, and fake autographs can be even more useless than cds.... And one thing is, we will never know whether the cds are original or not. But there sure are some really rare items..... You will love the Brahms 2nd by Gilels. I have it at home and also the Brahms 1st. 2 really noble and magnificent performance. I fell in love with them straighaway. Can try Richter for the Brahms 2nd too.

I have currently submitted 3 bids for certain items. I dont know whether they will come or not. If most do not, then in the long run you be spending even more money. Have you tried online cd stores rather?

Where are you from? I am from Singapore.

well if you really want it and think it's worth buying then go for it, just be careful and don't spend a ridiculous amount on it.

i haven't tried online cd stores as most are generally more expensive than ebay.
