I like his music very much. He wasn't afraid to be himself and play the sounds he enjoyed, and his distinctive, ebullient optimism and common sense in life and music was a refreshing change from all the morbid introspection and obsequious imitation in the jazz traditions.

He was a great musician...I'm not a huge fan of jazz, but his tunes are so well known that I actually played take 5 (solo) at a wedding a few years ago. And I don't even play from sheet music that much. That says something.
