Interesting. And also not too accurate. ;)
anyway, Rachmaninov's music has never been surpassed before or after his time. It is amazingly complex and exceedingly beautiful.

By the way, I posted a poll about the Rachmaninov vs Bach debate. It's in the Performance board.

But too few. And his not so great works are many.

Would it be fair to say that the greatness of a composer is measured by the sum of his influences and the number of performances of his work? In almost all major markets you have a Bach's Lunch (one hour of Bach every day) and Mostly Mozart Festival. Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker is performed year after year in every town at Christmas like clockwork, and you can bet in any given week, some orchestra somewhere is performing his Piano Concerto No. 1, Pathetique Symphony, Violin Concerto, or Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty suites. I'm also willing to bet that, on any given day of the year, someone somewhere is playing something by Chopin or Beethoven, whether it's at a competition, church or Town Hall recital, professional recording or concert.

Subjectivity alert.

Lets use my extremely objective and scientific formula to find out:

Rachmaninoff G=(33,5+0+0)/(2*2)=8,375
Liszt G=(29,5+0+0)/(1*3)=9,833

Sorry  ;D

I agree on the accuracy though...I would need to add a variable taking into account the concistency of works, since some composers wrote both amazing stuff and some really boring/annoying stuff...In this formula that is accounted more by the general feel of the repertoire, which is not accurate enough...But great innovations often need some development over time before achieving perfection.

"use of notes and stuff"? Doesn't sound like such a convincing argument to me. Explain please.
Rach would have never been able to compose the Art of Fugue, nuff said, only Bach could do this.

If skill level is the definition of greatness, many "great" men and women in history have to be stripped their greatness. After all, skill is not enough or even required always to make you popular/known/remembered.

This is only because of the public's tastes. Rachmaninov's music is too deep for them to grasp.

Not at all. I enjoy many composers such as Beethoven, Liszt, Chopin, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, etc. I just think Rach's music is the greatest and most moving of all of them. Not all of it, just his better works. My favorites are concertos 2 and 3.

And about me being an 8 year old boy: I'm not too sure if there are many 8 year olds around that can play around sixty different piano concertos including all Rachmaninov, Beethoven, etc. In addition to hundreds of solo pieces, which I will list if requested.

Some composers speak to us more than others, some have music we have a natural affinity for. No doubt a certain greatness is required for that, but of itself is of little value in comparing them.

Certain Rachmaninoff pieces clearly move you in a way that other pieces don't. That's great.

But don't expect everyone to see things the same way; it won't happen.

I'd like to hear what your experience is. Are you a professional pianist or do you just enjoy music? What repertoire do you know? Who are your favorite composers and what are your favorite works of theirs?

I fail to see how the anwers to any of these are relevant to what I said.

If you stick around, you'll get the answers to all of them anyway. Or, if you have a serious masochistic streak, they have all been answered in my previous posts.

Not to mention the pointy nature of the mountain vs the large number of people and the vast amount of equipment required to fit on it.

I honestly don't think it'll be that bad.  I mean, people have had tea parties on the top of Mt. Everest.  All we need is a clear day, and we're good to go.

Actually a clear week.  It's supposed to last for 7 days.  Which means we'll need to being some sleeping bags.

And who said that ending the world would be easy!

We'll build an air conditioned concert hall up there.

bribe me.

You can offer you 2 cents, several times over.

If you're lucky, that may at some point result in the miracle of you being able to remember a score.

Especially at current exchange rates. A chip implant, perhaps? Every score ever written, all safely embedded for instant recall.

That seems like the kind of thing that may one day be a viable option.. perhaps more than 2c worth, but certainly no need for omnipotence..

Exchange rates probably not a factor, I wouldn't want to undergo surgery relating to a recently developed technology in Zimbabwe.
