Hi guys (and girls!)
I'm a 28 year old male. I started practising improvisation just over a year to go. With no one to advise me, and no real clue as to how to go about learning to improvise, I practised from the exercises in classical harmony books, traditional four part harmony. Now I can do these exercises reasonably fluently, so I can use them as a basis for some improv. This is fine I think, as I like the sound of this style of music. My question: how long should I spend doing exercises like this, and how long just trying to improvise, I suppose what you might call free improvisation? There is a distinction between playing and practicing I think. Atm I suppose I spend about 50% of my time doing exercises, 25% on scales and arpeggios etc and 25% just freely improvising as best as I can. Is this any good?
Hope my post made sense, found it a bit hard to explain. Any advice greatly appreciated.
