Winter Break- Moonlight Sonata 3rd Movement Measure 23
on: December 26, 2012, 09:59:23 PM
Hello, this is my first time posting on this forum, and I wanted to ask a question about the 3rd Movement of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. After the beginning runs of the piece with the right hand, I'm having some trouble on this particular part. On this measure, the sixteenth notes switch to the left hand (base cleft) and my teacher has told me that rotation of the wrist will be very important for this section (and the piece in whole), but this particular left hand rotation is giving me some trouble. It is from B with the 3rd finger to D# with the 1st finger (thumb) and I can't figure out how to rotate the wrist properly here. The rotation comes easier with 5 to 1 patterns, but it feels like I won't be able to get it fast enough and that I'm using too much finger when it's 3 to 1. The 3 to 1 pattern occurs numerous times throughout the piece, and it just doesn't feel as comfortable as the 5 to 1 ones. Could anyone give me any advice on how to fix this problem? Or perhaps a better fingering? Also, I'm sorry if this is very unclear, I'm having trouble with wording this. Also, if it would be better, I can take a screenshot of the specific measure. Thanks in advance.

Just use your fingers to begin with.  The wrist rotation will be very small, almost like a tremor.  Don't focus on it, it will just come as you get more efficient with the movement.
