rhythm question mazeppa
on: January 11, 2013, 11:27:29 PM
hi guys
i have some issues with some of the rhythm in liszts TE #4(I know it seems weird that I have rhythm issues at this stage, just bear with me please). The first part of the piece is in 4/4. In measure 55, liszt writes rhythmic markings like this:

(eight note)...(eight note rest)...(a group of 9 notes)...(eight note)...(eight note rest)...(triplet)

i was just wondering, would the group of 9 notes constitute one beat? it just seems weird since then those 9 notes would be so much faster than the rest of the piece.

Thanks!

So it's basically a crotchet triplet, each crotchet with its own quaver "subtriplet"?

Looks like it, but Iīm starting to have my doubts too now that I see it... the edition I have has two "3"s placed awkwardly, like if the 3rd crotchet has a triplet too.

Actually, itīs written as if it were a 5/4 measure.

OH! I understand now! I've just checked the Peters edition

It's actually 2 groups of crotchet triplets. Let me try to post it here.

                            TRIPLET                                                      TRIPLET
Crotchet         Crotchet          Crotchet        Crotchet            Crotchet           Crotchet
8th - 8th rest -  quaver triplet - quaver triplet     quaver triplet - 8th - 8th rest - quaver triplet

Beat 1                         Beat 2                           Beat 3                    Beat 4

I believe you mean 6/4? But yes, you are right, you treat the 6 supposed crotchet beats as 2 lots of triplet crotchet beats. Ignore my first post then...

Yes.

I got confused at first because the edition I downloaded first wasn't so clear, and I couldn't see what you meant with the 6 beats because it mas missing the slurs grouping the 3 crotchets :P, sorry. The Peters edition was better.
