Take Theory Exam or Not?
on: October 22, 2004, 07:42:21 PM
Hello, i have been taking theory for 6 months now. I quit 2 years ago just to take a year and a half break from all of piano and now i have 6 weeks till my level 1 thoery exam, but i just go my theory supplement book and i got a ton of new things to perfect before the exam on December 11. My teacher says i have the option of skipping the exam and going right into lvl 2 because of my outstanding mark on the Preliminary Rudiments. I want to take the exam but i do not know if i have a chance at learning it all before the 11th. Give Your opionin please.

Do not practice just for your weekly lesson.
Do not learn just to pass a class.
Do not study just to pass a test.
Do not memorize so you can forget the day after.
If you do any of the above (we all do to some extent, and some more than others), then you have fallen into the mystical trap of the Institution. What will happen is that the long term goals, if there were any to begin with, disappear because you can not see them. The only thing that is real is to you is the weekly lessons that you want to do well, the class you must pass at the end of the semester, and the tests during the class.
So you want to take the theory exam. If you have a better reason than just to pass it and will do more than just memorize the material, then there is no need to take the test. But if you only care about passing it and only memorizing the material needed to pass it for just that test, then you must take it.
What I am getting at is that the subject here may be explicitly about a theory exam but the person contemplating it is you. If you find no use for the material in the exam, then study for it and take the test. But if you do find use for the material, then there is no need for you to take the test.
