When I arrived, there was a chat room.  It was the first time I had ever participated in internet "chat", and I felt like I was going into one of those back rooms in, well, you know, and I was so nervous and only "listened" in on other users' conversations.  Then, for some reason, they discontinued it.  Maybe something dirty was going on...

That's right, I tried the old chat room too once or twice. As with Facebook, the conversation tended to become trivial. "I have just been to the barber", "I had bacon and eggs for breakfast this morning", "I have a funny pain in my big toe" - you know the sort of thing. There was nothing rude, but music became obscured in a mass of detail about everyday activities, which didn't really interest me. For much the same reason I find Facebook strangely tedious; handy for finding old friends, useful for overseas contact in emergencies, but that's about it.

The chat board did bring some life to the forum. I think it became too difficult to moderate thats why it was removed. People could argue there and then it would spill into the forum. I'd love to see it back, we had some awesome conversations but you know the internet, always brings one or two psychopaths to spoil it for the rest of us.

That kind of thing would need 24/7 supervision I would imagine.. and I suspect nils either can't or doesn't want to do that.

I did a search through Google and here's the answer by Thal:
What happened to the Chat Room?

Nobody used it, so it was removed.

I don't think thats the answer... it's not like keeping the chat room costs any money.

Money is not the only concern. You *have to* administer a chat room because it is a platform for potential abuse in more than one sense. As a matter of fact, almost any extra feature on any forum is in some way a burden.

At it's most popular, the chat never had more than about 10 users online at the same time.

Often, I would sit there for ages on my own :'(

If enough people want it returned, perhaps the boss might allow a trial period.

I would like that myself.

Yes this was already said in the opening posts. I was pointing out that even if it wasn't popular that isn't a reason to remove it.

Yes this was already said in the opening posts.

I was actually referring to networking security, not to abuse by the members. A chat board is software, and software always comes with security holes in it. ;)

Hehe, I guess if a blackhat wants to hack pianostreet they don't need a chatroom for that.

I think this would be a pretty interesting thing to have. After all. piano is no small and scant topic in terms of what can be said.

Someone could always make their own.  There were AIM rooms before the official chat room here.
