Sore Wrists! :(
on: October 24, 2004, 06:37:39 AM
Hello Everyone,  I have a hurdle in piano technique I just can't seem to get over.  I can play some slower pieces just fine at a grade 10 level (Canadian ARCT), e.g. Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata (commonly nicknamed the "Smurf" sonata - it's played when Gargamel comes ...)  But, a piece like Chopin's Military Polonaise is quite difficult.  It's not that I can't "do it", it's that my wrists, especially my right wrist (I am right handed), get VERY sore before I can finish the piece.  I love Military Polonaise, but can't finish it before I have to stop from the discomfort, almost pain.  I don't think this was a problem earlier in my piano learning because I didn't have a more advanced level when I was a child.  I don't know what to do about this.  It is very aggravating, because I can "play" advanaced pieces, but the only hurdle is getting so sore that I can't go on.  I have searched online about this, but have never been able to find any info in this regard.  I have tried "relaxing" while I play and I practise relaxing while playing , "The Maple Leaf Rag" (fast paced throughout).  I have also tried working on "Indenpendance of the fingers", holding down fingers 2 and 4 and depressing adjacent keys successively with fingers 1, 3 and 5 as smoothly as possible, but I just can't seem to get rid of soreness in my writs.  It's the same if I practice scales quickly.  It only takes about 10 minutes of fast playing and then I can't go on.

Any thoughts on this?  Please help me .... I want to be able to play "Fantasie Impromptu eventually ...."

Grade 10 and ARCT are two different levels. Pathetique is under Grade 10.

Military Polonaise killed me too. Can't help you, sorry.
