Your top 3 Chopin polonaises
on: February 22, 2013, 08:40:01 PM
#1 - Heroique, op.53 / Grande Polonaise Brillante, op.22(added because of forgot)
I adore these masterpieces! They always makes me feel happy. My favourite solo piano pieces(one of them maybe) of all time!!!
How could he found an attractive melody, an amazing harmony like this? How he felt? Just wondering...

#2 - op.26 no.1, C# minor
Oh... You know that C sharp minor theme. Isn't it attractive?
I don't know why, but this polonaise is catching me, for even now! I feel so different about it. Maybe not as majestic as op.44 ''tragic'', but simplicity can affect better sometimes.

#3 - Tragic, op.44
Wonderful, just wonderful. Splendid, a real virtuosic masterpiece...

There's also ''polonaise fantasie''. Too different from the others, too different for a polonaise. One of the best works from Chopin...

Grande Polonaise Op. 22 has to be near if not at the top.

What a wonderful piece that is.  One of the absolute favourites in my repertoire.  Makes me feel happy just thinking about it now!

I was thinking about that long time. It is difficult to choose only 3 of them. So, the list is:
1) Op.40 no.2 c minor. It's hard to find good interpretation, but when you are in-the sadness and pain catch you. It's like-everything is dying, the last candle is shining and someone's trying to blow out it.
2) Op.44. I call it "theatrical" because of the forissimo and "banging" the piano. I feel cold in every part of my body. The devil in my head is trying get out of me. It is full of despair and some kind of extrovert, but still holding inside and it makes you crazy.
3) Op.61 Polonaise-Fantasie.I fee it like the part of dying, whan your soul goes to the heaven, you are just being. Everything is done and it is the real termination of the life. You are happy because you are you and noone can damage you. it is the flying between clouds in a nothing.

The only reason why I didn't choose Heroic Polonaise is, that it is not as deep as the mentioned polonaises.
Bach-Prelude and Fugue 2
Mozart-Sonata 545
Schubert-Klavierstucke D946 - 1, 2
Chopin-Etude 10/9, 25/12
Liszt-Un Sospiro
Rachmaninoff-Prelude 23/5, 3/2

1. F sharp minor Op. 44 (this is more of a nostalgia pick as I absolutely loved this piece in my teens, I think the other two are better crafted pieces, but I just love the fire of the outer sections of this one, even if it borders on being a bit too repetitive).
2. Polonaise_Fantasie Op. 61
3. Heroic Polonaise

1. Heroic Op. 53: My mother loved this piece... this was probably the first polonaise I've ever heard in my life
2. F# minor Op. 44: What Lelle said pretty much describes this piece for me. This was also the first polonaise that I learned
3. Fantasie Op. 61: I used to actually hate this piece of whatever reason, but over the years it grew on me.
