Who's the best pianist on pianostreet?
on: February 25, 2013, 01:49:26 AM
I think it's either ajspiano, or perfect pitch.

Lol.

You know marik was able to play pretty much all chopin etudes by the time he was 18, and he's now in his 40's I think...  he can also already play the rach 3..

or do you mean regularly active? still not likely I'm even close. Birba shreds me. Years more experience musically.

We also haven't seen paul (p2u_) play, but his knowledge speaks for itself and I would suspect he is a very fine musician. Pts1 also strikes me as likely being one of the hidden gems.

Why thank you... I still have a lot to learn though...

I am working towards it though.

We could for a laugh say it's 89thkey, since he did apparently learn Rachmaninoffs 3rd Piano concerto in a week... but that would just sully this great thread and forum.    ;D

There are a lot of good players on here, who do not necessarily stay active on all boards. Some who I've noticed are (in no particular order): hakki, arielpiano, rachfan, furiouzpianist, birba, andhow04, teresa_b . . . I know there are more whose playing I like but cannot think of them all right now. And, of course, I agree with some who have already been mentioned.

Derek and ted have posted some impressive improvisations.

I was just about to mention him when I noticed that you'd gotten there first!

His latest public performance was a 4-hour extract from Sorabji's 7 hour long Sequentia Cyclica super Dies Iræ ex Missa pro Defunctis in Clavicembali Usum or, as it's better and more simply known, Sequentia Cyclica; you may ask yourself why it is that only Jonathan Powell has so far played the entire piece (as he did when premièring it almost two years ago in Glasgow) but the answer is all too obviously because, so far, he's the only pianist who can.

That said, the best banjolier on Pianostreet is...

Possibly J Powell.

I have suggested a couple of times that he consider learning the banjo, but he said it was too much like a violin on which he was crap.

Methinks he will try.

Or perhaps, the only one who would want to.

Anyway, I thought he had given up all that plinky nonsense to play Alkan and Medins.

I haven't listened to all the players mentioned, but I'd agree with Thal on ronde. I was listening to his Thalbergiana and Verdi-Martucci tracks all of 30 minutes ago. They have made it onto most of my classical playlists. Never that sharp sound occasionally heard in fortissimo, perfectly fluid dynamics. The recording quality is also a wonderful bonus. I can actually play it on full volume with no static to drown out annoying people on the train  ;D

Apparently, he performed the Busoni Second Sonata for violin and piano (as the violinist, that is! - I do not know with which pianist) many years ago and I imagine that, had he really been a "crap" violinist, he'd have done no such thing. He also performed Vierne's Second Organ Symphony when he was a student. Scary, no? But let's not forget that Alkan and Michelangeli were both organists and violinists as well as pianists in their respective youths...

What "plinky nonsense"? His repertoire had long been and remains a very varied one that has for years included late Chopin, Liszt, Alkan, Rachmaninov and Medtner alongside Sorabji, Finnissy, Xenakis, Ferneyhough and many other composers of all manner of persuasions (not least the most fortunate present writer - and not least Powell himself on all too rare occasions)...

All the more reason for learning the banjo then, as he would exceed both of them.

Thanks  ;) .. I'll mention the recording quality to my engineer which will be gratifying after the hours and hours we spent de-noising! We had the pp turned up to ff looking for background noise and we decided anyone who still hears noise must have the volume at a suicidal level!!

Best pianist on the forum: marik. Sadly koji doesn't seem to post (here) anymore or he would be a contender. Andhow is consistently impressive. Enzo, can, viking, mussorgsky and furiouzpianist are at different stages in their young careers and are all clearly talented.

Perfect Pitch

Holy crap... You honour me...

As sad as it is to say it, I probably wouldn't even say myself. Granted I've recorded some difficult works in the past, but my output lately has been as dried up as a shrinky-dink.

It makes me smile, but given what I've seen Enzo accomplish over the years - he also may be worthy of the title.

Although, I had forgotten all about this thread. Actually makes me want to seriously start practicing and take the title (so to speak).

I would like to nominate AJ Long as the best composer, and one of the best pianists on this site. Too bad he's so humble or he would have probably nominated himself. ;)

Oh yes I think that electrafingers might have AJ beat. The first time I clicked on this site was when I typed in "Chopin Etude op.25 no.6" on Google and his recording in the audition room came up. I clicked on it and I was like... :o Then I signed up for an account to hear more. Haha!
