Audition Rep. for a Master's
on: March 05, 2013, 03:38:56 PM
I am going to be auditioning for my Master's degree in the fairly near future and I am looking for opinions. Here is my list so far (remember it is only a Master's, not a Doctorate as of yet).

1. Bach Fantasia and Fugue BWV 894
2. Beethoven Sonata Op. 90, No. 27 in E minor
3. Brahms Rhapsody Op. 79, No. 1 in B minor
4. Liszt La Campanella
5. Prokofiev Toccata in D minor

Feel free to rip my choices to shreds...all in good nature.

I would get rid of the prokofieff. Most teachers dont like the toccatas because they are amusical. And because you are gonna show off alot of fast notes with the campanella, there isnt any reason to play the toccata. Other than that its a pretty average repertoire and well balanced...
Here in Czech republic, we had to choose among Liszt, Chopin, Schumann, or Brahms´ sonatas. One of the big romantic sonata was a required piece for our Master´s recital. I guess that time is gone now.

May I ask how old are you?
I think you should go with prokofiev sonata and maybe a harder Bach...

I am 21 years old. Most of the schools that I am looking at (Eastman School of Music, New England Conservatory, and Indiana University are the top three) request:
1. Prelude and Fugue by Bach
2. Beethoven Sonata
3. substantial Romantic work
4. Concert Etude
5. 20th-21st Century Piece

I'm neither a professional nor a teacher.

I supsect you pick the pieces you have most confidence.

Just one silly thought.  Beethoven Sonata No 27 in E minor is the "relatively easier" ones amongst his 32 (or 35).  Certainly any Beethoven Sonata is never really easy, and the examiners will be very familiar with every one.  Here I ain't suggesting you should go for Appassionata, Hammerklavier, etc.

Perhaps it'd also be easier for others to comment if you can tell what other pieces you could easily substitute.

Thanks for the comment! It is not really a question of what I can play now because I don't audition until the beginning of next year and I still have to fulfill my requirements for my Bachelor's degree. It is more a question of balance.

I understand that the Beethoven is one of the "lesser" Sonatas (if there is such a thing) however, I feel I should master something that is relatively easier and therefore more comfortable in an audition setting. Most of the people I have talked to say that it is not quantity but quality.
