Requesting Jazz piano pieces
on: March 22, 2013, 12:19:47 PM
Hi everyone,

I want to study more into Jazz music - unfortunately I'm a complete newbie regarding Jazz music so I'd like some suggestions to make a start. I would classify myself als a medium skilled piano player, around grade 7/8 I guess.

Thanks in advance,
- Drex

Pieces by Gershwin, especially his preludes may be a good start.

Thanks for the suggestion patrick!

I've listened to Gershwin and it sounds very interesting.

Maybe some Dave Brubeck?  Strange Meadowlark is nice, Blue Rondo alla Turk is pretty iconic.

I second Gershwin, currently agonizing over "I Got Rhythm" right now...but there are easier arrangements if you like.

Slightly less "on-point" might be some ragtime?  Joplin or Botsford would be the obvious choices, and this is an important precursor to jazz.

I also like Robert Starer's "Sketches in Color" for introductory-to-intermediate-semi-contemporary selections.  "Pink" and "Orange" are pretty popular, you can find them on Youtube.

I really recommend Jazz Rags and blues by Martha Mier's  book 5,  I find its really not that bad allot of the pieces are nice and relaxing and the book is meant to be intermediate to early advanced

Look for songs by Scott Joplin, they are really ragtime but jazz really is ragtime, just a certain kind of it... Plus they are extremely fun to play

I would suggest trying some of Billy Mayerl's pieces. They are all quite short. Some can be difficult though. They might souns as if they will be easy to play but the composer used to play them at a very rapid pace ( on rolls ). If you are not familiar with Billy Mayerl music the most well known one is Marigold.
