Continue with a workshop
on: March 22, 2013, 02:55:12 PM
I am worried, because since September I have been in a workshop in a music school. Since the beginning, they told us that the workshop has not the aim to be neither in the curricula nor in a kind of preparation for the admission exam.

I want to prepare for the admission exam also, but I want to continue in the workshops, there will be only 20 more classes. However, some of the classes' dates may cross with the exams, or maybe if they see my name in both the workshop and the admission exam´s payment, it can affect to my possibilities.

Maybe my problem is that I am thinking this too much, but I understand that the workshop's aim is for amateur, while the admission exam is to enter to courses to become a professional.

I liked the workshop, there I got aware of my faults (one of them is that I need to relax my body in order to play more fluently :P), but in the last 10 classes I had a teacher who has paid attention to every student only 15 minutes, and usually he extends his time with some other students. In the last classes, I felt very frustrated and although he doesn't mean it, he made me feel that I am always doing mistakes and that I don't progress.

On the other hand, I met a student of the same school (he is studying the Major of Piano) who can give me private classes in order to prepare with the admission exam, his announcement has shown that he can teach at every level to every aim. I had a class with him, he is very patient and he calmly pointed my mistakes.  Maybe this is because of the first class, but I felt that there is a quite difference in his teaching.

What do you think?, maybe the answer is in front of my eyes, but I am afraid to do the wrong desicions.

What harm will there be in missing the workshop on the dates of exams ? If basically none but missing the work shop on those dates then continue with them.

If you can get competent help for the exams that must be a good thing.

Keep in mind as you work towards your exam dates you will have lots of practice time that may cut into possible time fr extra activities. I shouldn't be guiding you on this as I never have gone the exam route, it's just a common sense approach based on experience with preparing for recitals.
Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.
