More control of our our thread?
on: April 15, 2013, 10:50:11 PM
Would we be able to delete posts on own our threads?

That way we could police them ourselves instead of having to have Nils step in.

Probably something that could create some drama on its when someone gets their comment deleted by the original poster.  Maybe it would be something for people with a certain number of posts.  I wouldn't mind having the ability, but I don't see myself using it very often.

I would be interested in such option.

However, I think we also have to caution about abuse of it.  We don't want a mass deletion of topics because someone got click happy.  Perhaps a limit on the amount of use in a given time.  Something like one thread every eight weeks per user or something of that nature.  Maybe even prevent newly registered members from having this ability, so spammers and such won't abuse it.

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

I don't know if we can do it anymore, but we used to be able to delete our own threads.  I think Nils retracted that.  I didn't think it was a big deal either way.

This would be giving a different kind of ownership over a thread.  And the thread owner could moderate their own thread.  If someone didn't like it, having a comment deleted, they could always make their own thread.

interesting question -

I'm not sure that SMF has the facility to provide that power without out also giving you power over other peoples threads. I'm fairly sure that you are either a moderator the the power to delete/edit other peoples posts, or you are not.. and this can't be provided to a regular user based on who started a thread without significant recoding/customization of the SMF model.

The risks are higher in number than the benefits. What do you think will happen to the readability of many topics, considering the following?
1) Some people on this forum (even some with many posts) give the impression they are writing from mental hospital.
2) Some people may not understand that refraining from exercising power is often more powerful than exercising that power.
3) Some people here hate each other, so they may start boycotting any posts of the people they hate in "their" topics.
4) Posts that are simply misunderstood may also readily be deleted by the topic "owner", etc. etc.
No amount of how-to information is going to work if you have the wrong mindset, the wrong guiding philosophies. Avoid losers like the plague, and gather with and learn from winners only.

 ;D

Unless you include me in that, in which case  :( :P

Whilst there are certainly some off topic posts, some malicious posts and some just plain weird ones, I suspect that individual topic starters are just as likely to be guilty of each of these as posters withing the topics.

Apart from destroying the readability of some threads, it would also allow some people to post their own outlandish ideas and then crush all opposition.  I know that the opponents could start a new thread, but for readers that becomes something unmanagable to follow.

My vote would go to not allow the power (assuming it's even feasible technically).

I should also point out I'm not suggesting any of the previous posters in this thread would use the power in the ways I've suggested. But a quick glance through the board should indicate that there are plenty of likely suspects.

Nils should give me admin and I'll ban all the multiple account users and trolls.

how do you find out multiple account users?
Speaking of which, i have a confession to make.  After that becky-ladypianist-armyrecruit hoax, i was so embarassed about being duped, so angry, i left the whole site.  But then i was curious after a few months and came back as a woman.  It only went on for a few weeks - i even posted some chopin - and then i left her in the dust.  Wolfi caught on - by the way, where is he? I miss his sanity - and i felt very guilty about doing this.   Well, guilty and sort of excited in a devious way...
But no one else caught on, so i don't know how the adminstrator could.

I don't see what difference it makes on this forum whether you are a woman or not...so no need to feel quilty really...but coming back as a woman sounds cool, like coming back from the dead really :)

Hi Birba! :) Well actually... Wolfi didn't caught on... I told him... I figured out pretty quickly... and I wasn't planning on telling anyone... I know i shouldn't have... but once we were talking on Facebook with Wolfi and he said he wrote to you and asked you where you were and he said you told him you were back on Pianostreet as another person and Wolfi said he had been thinking about who it could be but just couldn't figure it out... so ... I said I knew (or at least that I thought I knew cause you can never be 100% sure of course)... and he asked me if I could tell him... and because I really trust Wolfi I told him, but before I told him I made him promise that he wouldn't tell anyone and that he wouldn't be angry at you... (I can show you our conversation if you want). And it seemed to me like he didn't really believe it... and then we never talked about it again so I didn't know he told you!! Sorry i hope you didn't stop using that account because Wolfi knew... I hope I didn't ruin everything for you... :-\
(Oh Wolfi doesn't have much time now I guess, he has a girlfriend!)  :P  :)

Littletune ! How we have all missed you ! How good to see you back. I have missed your refreshingly sincere and intuitive approach to the instrument and to life in general. Stay around this time please. Yes, I wish K and Wolfgang would come back too, such extraordinarily talented individuals. I wouldn't have known about that, Birba; anybody can put one over me and probably does, day in and day out. Who cares ? I am genuine and that's all that matters in the end. Let's just get back to our music. That accent of yours on the A in Sospiro is excellent ! I do it all the time now and think of you.

Did we have Nils step in ?  If we did I like that option better. If Nils is the hitter and he can hit a home run then let him swing. No need for wannabees on this forum

What a wonderful new year's gift!  Littletune is back!  With her same candor and innocence.  Are you still playing? Can we hear what you're doing now?

Thank you Ted!! :) :) I didn't really think anyone was missing me... your comment made me very happy! :)

Thank you Birba!! :) :) Yes I am still playing, but last year I didn't practice as much as I used to. It was just a difficult year and there were all sorts of things that made it not so easy for me to practice! So I didn't take my grade 5 exams and I only had two recitals, but I hope this year will be better! :) Ok I will try to post my Christmas recital :) And I'm supposed to have my next recital at the end of January or February where I'll be playing Schubert's Military March with one other girl from my music school!  :P It's really fun! :)

HI Outin! :) Thank you very much! :) Well... my pets had quite a lot of health problems last year... that was one of the difficult things... right now they seem to be doing ok, except one of my fish who is not eating... we gave her medication we're hoping it will help...
Maybe I'll post more during the weekend... thanks again  :)
