Richter Enigma
on: October 28, 2004, 09:42:50 AM
Jost got it last night. It's amazing, but made me cry. First because how he looks back at his life and also at the end when he says he has lost his auditory things and perfect pitch. The most emotional part in my idea was the last sentence he said:

"I don't like myself" and then came a pic of him in the background saying"Svyatoslav Richter, 1915,1997)" that made me cry for 10 minutes.

From what I've heard, that line was taken out of context. It probably didn't mean what Bruno Monsaingeon made it mean. It's easy to manipulate things like this in film.

he was refering to a certain concert which he played in and he didn't like his playing in that concert. However, a very touching film, last scene with Schubert playing in the background, we see him putting his hands on his face and head....

Having just read Monsaingeon's biography of Richter with the same title, I certainly did not get a picture of a brokenhearted man. I find it interesting that Monsaingeon  would give two different perspectives like this on the same person. The book gives the impression that, despite the many hardships Richter had to endure in his life, piano was able to give him enough reprieve to continue living in a rather contented manner.

I haven't seen the film, but I've ordered it from amazon, and am waiting patiently for it's arrival. Glad to hear that it's good.  :)

THey need to release Enigma on DVD for region:1 USA.

I can't remember if it is Enigma or "the art of piano" where Richter rips out the 3rd movement of Tchaikovskies 1st piano concerto like a MACHINE...

I think they show that scene in both videos.  He makes it look so easy...

Pardon me for being uninformed, but what's the 'Richter Enigma?' It sounds interesting.

Its actually a documentary called "Richter: The Enigma".  Its awe inspiring and depressing..

I agree with Kempff about how the last line is so effective "I dont like myself".  I didnt quite cry for 10 minutes, but I had a lump in my throat..

Its quite rare actually.  My piano teacher lent his copy to me..
Here, you can buy it:

https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00000I7PQ/qid=1099111987/sr=8-2/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i2_xgl27/102-3404395-0027329?v=glance&s=video&n=507846
I admit, that price is a little steep for a VHS, but you get priceless clips of Richter playing.  I doubt you will find it on the shelf at the local library or at blockbuster for rent.
