Looking for a good intense, angry piece! Help!
on: April 17, 2013, 09:33:52 PM
I am a fairly new piano student. Currently, I am learning Schubert/Liszt's "Standchen" (Serenade) in addition to learning and memorizing all the Bach inventions.

Yet, I need to find an intense piece that is at my level to combat the serenity of the serenade. I'm looking for something dramatic and loud and demanding - one that gets out anger when playing. Thanks so much for any help!

Ahh, I like an angry piece myself.  ;D  Stuff that comes to mind:

Prokofiev Sonata 6 Mov. 1, or Sonata 7 Mov. 3 (Prokofiev is generally good for some aggression.)

Hindemith Piano Suite https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhV79upVmvo

Rachmaninoff Preludes C# minor, G minor

Bartok Allegro Barbaro

Chopin Scherzo 2, Prelude Op. 28, No. 12, Etude Op. 25, No. 10

Brahms Rhapsody Op. 79, No. 1 (not sure if I'd call it 'angry', but very satisfying to play when you're in that mood)

Beethoven Apassionata Sonata Mov. 3

...being a fairly new student, the Prokofiev and some others are likely too hard for you (but hey, you said 'demanding'). Allegro Barbaro, and the Rach Prelude in C# minor are probably the easiest of what I mentioned, so maybe start there.

Angry pieces are so fun to play! ;D
Here are some favorites:

Chopin: Etude Op. 10 No. 12; Waltz in E Minor Op. Posth.; Mazurka Op. 59 No. 3; Preludes No. 20 and 22.

Beethoven: Pathetique Sonata 1st Mvt.; Moonlight Sonata 3rd Mvt.; Tempest Sonata 1st Mvt.

Lecuona: Malaguena; En Tres Por Quatro (some really cool ones).

Brahms: Hungarian Dance No. 5.

Fina: Bumble Boogie.

Grieg: March of the Dwarves.

Those are a few that come to mind. Most are fairly accessible and they're all really cool songs. Have fun!

If you played Schubert-Liszt Standchen, then again Schubert-Liszt Des Madchens Klage would be good for you with all those loud octaves.  ;)

This one might be in reach. This clip is played a little fast but it has the music so you can check it out. JS Bach Prelude and Fugue in Cminor:

try some of Prokofiev's visions fugitive. There's a wide range of moods there.

Perfect. How is it that Richter still manages to make everyone else sound like rank amateurs?

Consider the Vecsey-Cziffra transcription of Valse Triste.

hahah, I have his complete set of the WTC on near permanent repeat at the moment. Too often I find myself feeling grossly inadequate.

Not only that, he makes this piece sound like it was written for Acoustic Piano. Pedaling, dynamics, everything

Chopin Scherzo No 1 is not only angry, it is apoplectic! Try not to have a heart attack playing it.

Ref.virtuoso80.

You ask about angry pieces.  How about the short Chopin Prelude in G minor?  There is a wonderful climax to all the agitation: he eschews a diminished seventh substituting an augmented 6th.  Marvellous.

Take Your Seat! Trifonov Plays Brahms in Berlin

“He has everything and more – tenderness and also the demonic element. I never heard anything like that,” as Martha Argerich once said of Daniil Trifonov. To celebrate the end of the year, the star pianist performs Johannes Brahms’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko on December 31.
