next chopin piece!
on: April 21, 2013, 10:10:22 PM
so after I finish the current Chopin etude I am learning, I want to start a big Chopin piece.  Maybe one of his Ballades or Scherzi.  I also like his Fantasie-improptu.  Do you guys have any other suggestions?  Do you think I'm biting off more than I can chew...
Debussy Pour le Piano
Chopin Etude 10/5, 10/9
Beethoven Sonata 2/2, 10/3
Bach P&F no. 7 WTC 1
Ligeti Musica Ricercata 10

Do the Heroic Polonaise! Get your left hand octaves really working.

@ OP - what Chopin have you played besides the etude?

I just finished the andante spianato and grand polonaise.  Easier then it seems, musically straight forward, so to speak, and very effective.

Then I'd have a go at a couple of the longer Nocturnes, including 48/2 first.

Then it's pretty much your choice from those mentioned above, or the Barcarolle, the Marche Funebre or the Sonatas.

Yep.

Ok so I have decided that I like the heroic polonaise, the military polonaise, Sonata no. 3, and nocturne op. 48 no. 2. So what do you think?

All good choices. Pick the one you like best, or, if you're going to do more than one, do them in (increasing) order of length.

Heroic Polonaise is very advanced.

''This piece is more advanced than any Chopin etude, it's like a blend all of them. Requires incredibly stamina, incredibly hand and finger stability, incredibly clean sound, incredible playing. So it's not a ''memorize and play'' piece!'' ( a masterclass with Martha Argerich, 2011)

First of all you need to play something more smooth.

48/2 is a nice choice!

Do the nocturne Op.48/2 and the polonaise Op.40/1. The nocturne is good exercise for the touch and sound and the polonaise is good preparation for the rhythm of polonaises. Bun honestly, I think that it isn't enought for the "Heroic". I would probably go fot full sets of Nocturnes Op.48 and polonaises Op.40. They are all great and very usefull. And maybe after that all I would go for the Heroic polonaise.
Good luck!

Yeah, I like the Op.40/1 polonaise very much so I will probably do that and the other op.48 nocturnes after the Op. 48/2 nocturne which I'll do first. Then I might try for the heroic :)

andante spianato/grand polonaise, polonaise in F# min., fantasy polonaise, heroic polonaise, and 2-4th ballades are all good choices(1st is too overplayed and very hard to play convincingly).
3rd sonata might be a bit tough.

'What Chopin to do next'.  If you are into the waltzes, the E minor is a really good one, and there is a lot of brilliant passage work in it.  What about the C sharp minor waltz?  There are some lovely harmonies in it.

If you are already doing Chopin's big pieces, these waltzes would make effective encore pieces.  Good luck.

I've already done the E minor waltz, but as you said the waltzes make great encore pieces.  I've already done quite a lot of the waltzes and I'm doing some of Chopin's bigger pieces.

I would recommend 48/1 or 48/2 in the Nocturne department.
I think you could probably learn one of the Ballades if you were truly committed and had the technique for it. Ballade No. 3 in A Flat is considered the easiest of the four.
Polonaise 40/1 in A major is pretty easy, to be honest. I played it a while back and it is a very energetic piece.
If you want to go for a more abstract work, the Bereceuse could be a good choice. The Bolero is also not as well known, but I think that you could learn it with more dedication.
Currently working on:
Chopin Etude Op 25 No 12
Rachmaninov Preludes Op 32 No 10 & 12
Bach Partita No. 2 Sinfonia
Saint-Saens Concerto No. 2 in G Minor

I'm gonna do the Op. 48 nocturnes and then once I finish those I was planning to do the Op. 40/1 polonaise, and after that either the Sonata no. 3 or Ballade no. 1, and then I could do the Scherzo no. 2 and then the heroic polonaise. Planning ahead. I'll get it done before college......

You do know that the sonata is like a billion times harder than all the others don't you? I think a good progression would be: Op 40/1, nocturnes, scherzo 2, ballade 1, heroic polonaise, a couple years maybe, then sonata 3. Also though, you obviously don't have to play all of those, just take it a step at a time. Good luck!

Don't know how 'big' you want it to be - do you mean long, or loud and impressive?

I've recently fallen for the op 60 Barcarolle and love working on it, and it's a swine of a thing to play! Taxing my abilities big time. (Maybe not a problem for the super-pianists on here, though...)

You could do the Fantasie Impromptu, but with some work it wouldn't take you too long.

How about his Impromptu no.1 in A flat Major?

You could also try a Ballade. If you want even longer you could do a Piano Concerto.

I thought the heroic polonaise was more difficult than the sonata no. 3. But anyways, I'm only 12, I have plenty of time to learn all these pieces lol
