Beethoven Sonata in f minor
on: April 26, 2013, 04:04:10 AM
Just out of curiosity, what level would you say each movement of the Beethoven Sonata Op. 2 No. 1 in f minor is? And which movement is the most difficult? I have already learned the first movement, and I am just now starting the last movement. I will eventually learn all of the movements, but my teacher assigned the last movement this week. It's probably weird that I'm not learning the movements in order haha

They're all difficult in their own way, but I assume you're referring to how difficult they are from a technical perspective. Here's my view on the matter:

I - fairly straightforward, except for some passages in the development section
III - fairly straightforward, except for the passage involving parallel 6/3 chords (mm. 59–62)
II - deceivingly difficulty, primarily due to the extensive ornamentation; you need both dexterity and a good sense of rhythm (e.g., mm. 36–52)
IV - the notes are easy, but getting them up to speed and maintaining that speed with accuracy and stability is another story
