Oh, i agree with you completely.  I was pne of the first here to say that.  I was only saying that she had the marketing idea to do what she wants to do in life.  She used youtube to garner "fame".  Like you pointed out, competitions, by themselves, don't really do that much.

This is legit.
"Beethoven wrote in three flats a lot. That's because he moved twice."

I think you can't underestimate the impact a performer's personality or presence has on an audience. Even people who aren't well-versed in classical music can pick up on this. Kissin is one of those pianists who I think brings an incredible energy and excitement to the stage, and people can feel this. He's also an enigma in many ways.  I also think that personality off stage makes a huge impact too. People who are great people persons, have charm and charisma beyond your average amount, are often very successful too.
Kissin is a charismatic pianist. I attended one of his recitals where he gave 7 encores! It was brilliant and the audience could not get enough! I was bowled over as well.

Because they look more attractive:
"They.... Pay more attention to her pretty face than her not pretty playing..."
-Felix Mendelssohn on Marie Synm-something.
They play more popular songs
They are more charming
They wiggle around when they are playing way too much, like a show man but with less MUSICAL INTERPRETATION!
Play louder songs
Play rock >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
