Only in the third person, so not an issue when addressing the spider, just when talking about it behind it's back - which, as you can see, is a problem easily avoided.

Well, around here it's considered rude to address someone as "it". Especially an accomplished musician.

Although I am notorious for calling people's infants "it", but an infant hardly could be considered a person yet...
