“The Sound Always Comes First” — Andrea Bonatta on Teaching Liszt

Why tone matters more than speed, why reading Goethe matters as much as practising octaves, and how a single insight can transform a performance. Italian pianist and scholar Andrea Bonatta has spent decades exploring the contradictions of Franz Liszt, from performer to man of faith, virtuoso to poet. Here, in conversation with Piano Street at Liszt Utrecht 2026, he shares his vision. Read more

Super Mario Bros movie with the animations, and cute 'cartoon' like figures (and despite the Jack Black voice for Bowser which is just BAD), and Chris Pratt playing Mario.

ZOMG you like know all the names!  I thought it was red fat guy and green skinny guy.  The red fat guy is Mario.

You are super into Japanese animation, I can tell, but you also know North American actors and care about who pretends to make up voices into a microphone!

You probably call them "voice actors" even, like those in the industry do!

Impressive display of your deep admiration for the cartoon industry and cinema in general.

YOU WERE GONE???

Who?

On a more less schrecklich note, I've been wanting to revisit Wagner at the piano again for a few months....I did a few accompanist gigs using whatever I found from the local library, don't recall.

No, I'm not going to buy the full score for the operas and reduce it myself for two hands....that's redundant, especially since many of the strings are playing the same thing....it's cognitive overload...meh....might just as well use the Dover thing.

I don't know, but here's a poll question:

If I were to play Wagner's Trist.u.Isold. solo piano I would:

(i) Try Liszt

(ii) do it myself from the full score

(iii) get the Dover, who cares

(iv) play it by ear because I'm a kek who longs for Britney Spears and thinks Hiroshima was bad.

(v) other

(vi) go pound off you hoser

why ignore me on this thread but not on second to last post wins there's even more people on that thread you can try to talk to

Link or it never happened.  Also, ur a homo who unironically likes Sxxxxbxx and are intentionally inviting the devil into our souls.

And a suspected furry.

And you probably play Airsoft Cosplay or perhaps some other kind of LARP.

I do not like your kind.  A Always B be C closing.

Ok I guess we have to pay for marriage councilling.

If it was a real relationship, you wouldn't need counselling.  Love would find you together.  Life would find a way.

I think it was more of a situationship with you two, but more communication and honesty is going to be the way forward.

For better, or worse.

I love you both as my creations and expressions of my joy, equally.

May you not forget the message I have sent in the name of my son, and witnessed by you by the grace of the holy spirit.

OK, kitty can scratch, and that's just fine.

Do me one favor, though, before you flounce out of here like a flaming gamer.

What would this sound like if an actual organist did this....and tell me exactly which parts were added in the studio.  It's not physically possible that a mere pianist like Gould did this at any organ, nor anybody else, but I believe he....well....80% sure or so, he covered the important basso parts on the pedals (more or less outlining the B-A-C-H "theme" that pervades this tune) in real time....although likely not, given his obsession with tape and studio frippery.

It's one of the more amusing studio tricks I've heard, in that it's not possible to perform this fugue as recorded at any organ, but it's an interesting exercise for the ear to discover which parts were added in post.

Yeah, like I said, probably even Gould could have managed those few elementary parts with the foot...not difficult at all...but at some point I have to put my foot down, so to speak, and say the charade is a bit facile.

Trust me, there are miraculous things possible at the organ, and to hear it live in its setting, it can be astonishing, with natural reverberations substituting for what one might with the sustain pedal at the piano, but this is a mere recording, and it's obviously not possible with two hands and one foot (the other foot controlling the expression for diverse manuals, which I'm sure Gould was not doing....so, pretend he had two feet and two hands).

It would be a good exercise to truly play this piece as written on an organ....on piano it's fine, but one has to rely upon the acoustic effects to make evident the separation of the voices, and Bach did make it very much easy for mere two-handed pianists to do that.

However, Bach was primarily an organist, by trade.  And, if his reputation didn't forefend any criticism, he was pretty damned good at it.

And LIIW responds accordingly, and is glad to hear of your promising results.

And, yes, I finally sight-read through the first movement of the Op. 81a, *Les adieux*....so, I finally know what that little kid was complaining about.

Well....

Judas *** christ, that's the whole point of the first movement, isn't it?

No, I would not be able to read that at performance speed with any confidence, but if that's the most difficult RH octaves you've done, what are you doing tackling this piece?

I'd be more concerned about the harmony, which is challenging...likely verging on atonal for its day...and the various exploitations of diminished/V7 Beethoven uses.

The RH octaves?  That's just the melody...yes, you can smudge it a bit with the sustain pedal, but Beethoven makes it very easy that everything conveniently ends up in the right spot.

90% of the time he isn't going into crossed-hands theatrics with changing clefs, it's figured bass and octaves or closed voicings in one or the other hand.

And, yes, it's generally supposed to be legato, is my impression upon reading through it.

I won't say it's easy, but it's not at all like some little exercise like the "Waterfall" étude or one of those little stunts that have no merit as music.

I don't know much about Gould unfortunately so I can't really comment on his playing... but after a preliminary listen to the piece and a few listens to other Glenn Gould videos... he strikes me as having a fantastic muscle memory in his fingers, and while I know his recordings are FULL of multiple takes, but to me that strikes me as Gould changing his mind about his interpretation almost on a constant daily basis. Get him to record it on a Tuesday - he'd probably play it one way. Get him to play if 4 days later on the weekend, and he'd probably start changing a lot and probably has been mentally thinking about it since Tuesday.

So for me, considering this piece sounds like it only has mere semiquavers and a few trills here and there... are you really thinking this isn't Gould?

Why not? As someone who has spent majority of his life to playing Bach like he has, I don't think it's out of his league to do so.

i was curious about this for sm time , but do yall have a job or something?

Yep - I teach at a school 5 days a week, accompany 4 choirs and play music for Mass. Why do you ask?

Of course it's Gould.  And, no it's not anything technically demanding, except in that one must be fairly precise in this one, and Gould's LH trills are indeed something I hope to aspire to one day.

I mean, I'm good and everything, but that pregnant cat is like a hummingbird in the LH, and the RH for that matter....I've probably caught up to him in the RH, but he just had a gift for that.

But on my last listening of this recording, like I said, it's obvious that it cannot have been performed as it sounds.  So, I was trying to figure out which parts Gould tracked separately in the studio.

i was curious about this for sm time , but do yall have a job or something?

No, certainly not.  That's why I allow that he could well have played the pedalboard during those few elementary moments.

Why not?  It was probably fun for him.

Otherwise, if you've ever spent any time at an organ or even a facsimile, such as one of the Hammond concoctions, you'd know it's not possible to perform that as recorded, in real time.

C'mon.  Perfect P.  You have pretty good ears.  Surely you can hear what we lesser beings can in this recording.  It's a four part fugue.  And mid-tempo.  And we have a nice established manuscript from Bach himself.

The registrations on the manuals don't line up, and the use of the pedalboard is very ad hoc.  It's not some blatant charade or having one over on the public....it's just not how it is possible for the organ to played...in a physical sense.

There is a recording of Gould doing this same fugue at the acoustic piano, and obviously he slays, but I'm more curious about how he achieved the effect at the organ.

No, I don't think so.  It's something I would have remembered, although I don't know Gould's life history to chapter and verse.

The organ would seem to suit Gould's rather mechanical approach to the keyboard, but in that case one should have expected rather more recordings to have emerged.

But I'm not concerned with the use of the organ here, but rather with the musical choices Gould made in the studio.

It's more a question of how the tape was manipulated at the console, such as it existed at the time, which it really didn't, as we know a mixing desk today.  It's an astonishing feat.

And, mind you, it's entirely possible I'm imagining the entire thing.  That's in part why I paid you that extra consulting fee for your expert opinion, or what one calls, "teaching."

Pimping ain't easy, homes!  Full time pimp, full time male gigolo, part time male prostitute.  It keeps the wheels spinning and the beavers grinning.

No I'm still waiting for your account details so that I can verify payment.  And you didn't actually perform any service at all, except make with the jibber jabber, so I'll pay a retainer held in escrow for future services to be rendered, at a flat rate per job.

Of course I pay for services rendered.  Except you've not serviced me!  You tease!

There's actually very few animations I watch, but I have a 9 year old nephew who loves them. While I love great cinema (the greatest movie I believe to be Shawshank redemption), sometimes you need to put something silly on once a year and just have a little laugh to yourself.

While I love great cinema (the greatest movie I believe to be Shawshank redemption)

It's a cute movie.  One small thing that I believe keeps it from being a truly great movie:  they shouldn't have stopped raping the Tim Robbins character until he was dead.  And the rest of the movie is all about drinking beer and listening to opera, and then Morgan Freeman dies quietly in his bunk.

Perfection.

That would have been sweet.  And poignant.  We are all born astride a grave, and like Sisyphus, Red continued his struggle, but ultimately succomed to the fates.  Instead we got some fantasy about some nerd who decided he'd rather drown in a large toilet than be raped again.

Actually, on a more serious note, what if they raped Tim Robbins to death, and then it was Morgan Freeman who discovered by his hard-won intelligence and folksy, home-spun aphoristic "wisdom" a clever means of escape.  Which he executed.

By stealing a gun off one of the guards, shooting the warden in the face, and unloading with a 50BMG machine gun on the whole damned place, while a white woman picks him up outside in a Cadillac El Dorado.

Now *that* would be a good movie.

(Also, a fantastic movie trilogy).

Is it nerd boy day here at pianostreet?  I didn't think so.  Hey, you!  Yeah.  Is it nerd boy day here at pianostreet.  That's right.

Well remember, all, to not speak ill of the Batman in front of the differently abled.  They'll not cease until they've done their best to make a token idol of glory of their darkness-cloaked hero.

Well, at least Gary Oldman has other, better roles by which he can be recalled more fondly.

And we always wonder why the writer never went that path...

Have you even seen the Dark Knight trilogy? It was one of the best superhero movies ever written - this said by pretty much most of the internet, and superhero fans alike.

Given how bad a lot of the Marvel movies are these days, it was nice to see a fresh take on the Batman superhero - given how terrible the movies from the 90's were.

ZOMG do you like not even know about the Pretty Pony franchise?

When you're done fangirling all over the place.

Yeah, of course.  I liked the first one of that little "trilogy," as though one could ascribe such scope to a little factory product.  In the first installment of that factory-made movie, there were characters about whom one could speculate, and exotic locations.

And a modicum of challenge and danger for the groundlings, with their jaws agape in the front row.

Of course they made more, to be perfectly formulaic little heist movies with a charimsatic villain or several.

Well, ŕ chacun son goűt.

I liked the one where Michael Caine did some stuff....and I think it had a Batgirl or something in it.  That was a good one.

Well, clearly, somebody didn't read the comic books and play the video games.

You know what else is really cool?

The Star Wars universe.  Truly, world-building on an epic scale.

We live in the golden age of media, my little yellow friend.

Well maybe you can explain to me what is up with the "second to last post" bullocks?  So the only difference is that everyone posts two in a row, like a dumb cornholing twat, and gets either censured or mild approbation (that means praise, but in a mild sense).

I'm not sure I want to Google that, and have that in my search records.

That's just a place for people who can't hack it here to bicker and murmur amongst themselves. The fact that everyone just double posts, shows how dumb the idea is.

Sure.  One of those.

You might know the actor better from one of your Star War movies or those Tolkien things by that fat kiwi pig who directed the movie *Heavenly Creatures* and then all that nerd shite.

But Vincent Price was not a terrible guess, provided one had never seen a movie before.

Okay... my first guess was pretty awful. It was before 8am and the coffee hadn't kicked in.

Christopher Lee. I recognised his face after realising he was in the Man with the Golden Gun.

Sure.  A regular connoisseur of cinema, I'm sure.

Any objections if I post some pictures of my cat, Bobbie?

Of course not.

YES... I do... no one wants to see your old, useless pussy...

There are WAY too many pictures of cats on the internet. We need some sort of cleansing of the internet.

Exactly.

A cat fancier to the last, as I suspected.

It was a daring try, on your part.

A closeted cat fancier....a bit....more than a bit, really....tragic in its own way.

Well, I suppose it's better than having one's dick smell of cheese.

I mean, well done, thou connoisseur of Harry Potter and the escapades of his merry triad.

I don't mind a cat now and then... marinated in a lovely sauce, served with rice.

So you had to purge them?

You think this is a game?  Some movie fantasy?

Just going around purging beasts, like a beastmaster?

Who knows?  I heard that, though.

See....that's the kind of thing that will habitualize one to prison life or perhaps beyond.

I'd keep that on the DL

And start using a proper knife, one of these days.

Could come in handy with all of your mass stabbings.

They won't allow a small snippet from the corpus of the great Paul Hogan in his own country, where he rules the people, like a god?

Shameful.

I'm sorry, it's the 1980's calling... they said to get with the times; he was never a god, doesn't rule the country, and hasn't been anything but a withered dried up skeleton for the last decade with nothing to show for it except the withering memories of a movie that was meh, even in 1980-whatever year it was.

Erm... I don't think anyone considers 'hands' a form of measurement. 'Feet'... sure, that's 30.48 centimetres for all the metric people out there who don't know how big a foot is.

And that's one big arse foot.

I measure you by your insane campaign of zealotry

Let's be honest though... if you were to go through a list of the 100 most influential, honest, hard-working or altruistic...

You'd need about 80 of those lists before his name appears anywhere.

Certainly "they" do.

In the UK and other Commonwealth nations, a hand is defined as exactly four inches.

Those "metric" people wouldn't know how to use a slide rule if it was shoved up their backsides and emerged from their filthy pieholes.

The decimal expression of rational quantities, which is by it's nature often imprecise, is second nature to those who continue to use the Limey Imperial system, whereas those without as much experience tend to struggle with such tasks, especially among mere tradesmen, such as musicians and the like.

What is four score times one hundred, anyway?

We get that you are a superb mathlete.

Also a raging nerd.

You've never answered why the French Republican Calendar, nor the decimalization of time never caught on, since you're so antipathetic to the King's Imperial measurements.
