Current value of 2002 Yamaha C2
on: May 23, 2013, 03:20:33 AM
Hello,
I am selling my 2002 Yamaha C2 satin finish piano. However, I am finding an extremely large price range out there. Anyone have any advice on what is a fair price to list for in Canada?
I should clarify, I am having the piano appraised, what I'm wondering is if they are selling used at their full value? Also wondering what the average depriciation is (or appreciation as I've heard from some). Just curious. Thanks!

I don't see why anyone would pay you full value (original price) for an 11 year old piano. Also, its not going to appreciate in 11 years. Its still a fairly new piano considering the avg. pianos life is typically 80 years.
I don't think there's a depreciation chart.. but I do know that once it drops to a certain price,, it tends to float there for a long time.
price would vary from dealer to private.. most dealers will resell these with warranty, financing and extras.. bumping the price up... but private,, I'd say somewhere around the low teens (U.S $), assuming its just a basic C2

The general thought about a piano being an investment or a safe value is just a myth. Every piano depreciates. Only the very best brands (Steinway, Bössendorfer, Bechstein and the like) keeps more of the original value (although they also depreciate). So, as sirpazhan noted, it's just impossible to ask the original price, even having into account inflation or even if the piano is in mint condition.
Just a little example: a few months ago I saw a C3 from 2000-2001. It was almost like new and the former owner played it very little and he tuned it yearly. The seller was asking 9000 eur for it. It cost around 12000-14000 eur on its time (with another currency, the euro didn't exist yet). Now a new C3 costs more than 22000 eur.
