Can this get tailored?
on: May 24, 2013, 11:51:10 PM
So my dad was being a loser and made me go to this cheap ass store to buy a suit for graduation.

So we got the cheapest suit...

It's freaking enormous what the heck?!!?!  I'm like a 30/30 while the pants are like 38/36 what the heck?!!?!!  And the shirt is too freaking big!!!  The jacket was decent, but the arms are too freaking long.

So...

If I took it to a tailor, would he/she be able to shrink everything to my size?

Yeah, mostly I think...

I only know that tailors design suits for you according to your size and length, I imagine a tailor could modify or repair clothing without problem.

How much do you think it should cost?

I think it depends on the tailor and where you live, I'm not really sure, my guess would be 100 dollars max.

How much was the suit?

Sounds like it.  I don't think it's going to be $100.  Maybe $60-ish?

You could have them leave it slightly larger so you could grow into more later.  Get more use out of it.

At some point, you'll buy your own suit in the future.  Another way to go is to buy that suit now, but it sounds like it's done already.  It probably doesn't matter.  An extra suit won't hurt later.

You'd have to get a suit tailored a little bit with whatever you got most likely.  The less tailoring, the cheaper, of course.  The less 'invasive' the tailoring too, the cheaper.  Shortening the sleeves is easier/cheaper than ripping the back apart.

In italy you wouldn't pay more than 50$ to have it altered.  Right, costicina? (If you're still around...)

The whole suit or the tailoring?

An alternative is to spend a week on fast food and, rather than shrinking the suit, grow into it.  8)

Did the sales people not even try to get you a close enough size?  I can understand the need to be on a budget but the difference from 30/30 to 38/36 is not small.  Can you exchange the suit for a different size?  At least get something somewhat closer.  There still may need to be tailoring done to tweak the fit, but it won't be as drastic or as costly.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Ripping apart and tailoring the jacket might cost more.  That crossed my mind.  Sleeves are one thing, but the length across the chest and all that is different.

the tailoring cost is pretty dependent on the significance of the alterations and in relation to how exactly it has to be altered..

for example, some long sleeves can just be shortened at the wrist end.. others have to be removed and adjusted at the shoulder, which is way more work.

at my wedding my suits alterations cost $28.. where as one of my groomsmen's was $188.

I rather think cheap suits are a total waste of money. Your dad needs a slap.. honestly there is always a good suit on sale.

I don't know.  My son just lost 100 lbs. and tried to get a new suit tailored.  They said it's too much of a difference.  Can't be altered.

Take it back and get one that fits. Failing that put it on and sit in the bath for an hour. It'll either shrink or be ruined, either way you may finally end up with one that fits.
