Lucas Debargue - A Matter of Life or Death
Pianist Lucas Debargue recently recorded the complete piano works of Gabriel Fauré on the Opus 102, a very special grand piano by Stephen Paulello. Eric Schoones from the German/Dutch magazine PIANIST had a conversation with him. Read more >>

I just tested an 1896 Steinway model B (Hamburg), and while I did love it, am looking for opinions on the wisdom of purchasing such an old but beautiful piano. It certainly is a different animal to the newer ones, but need advice. Less keys is a factor. The restoration was done in the UK by Steinway dealer, all looks great with the caveat that I saw glue marks underside on the soundboard. The case doesn't have one scratch on it. My alternative is to find a newer one, 1980's or newer and of course pay more. BTW they're asking about 27K US$
Ideas? Thanks!

This one was restored in april. 19 200 € = 25 000 $

If you want to buy S&S B from 1965-1982, send me private message.

I'd really have to know what "restored" means, since what is included in a restoration is variable.  That said, I have an 1898 A (New York) which is not restored, although it has been restrung and with new tuning pins (original pin block).  It has the original action which, though a bit finicky to adjust, has a really wonderful touch (or at least I like it).

I wouldn't worry about glue on the soundboard; if it was done right, and the instrument has good tone and no buzzes, it's not a problem.

In this case "restored" means:
The acoustic body restored with new Steinway strings.
The iron frame (new lacquer) and soundboard are also in best quality.
The action was restored with new Steinway hammers, new Steinway tuning pins, new Steinway damper felts, all brass-parts are new (also bought by Steinway), new Steinway key tops.

Also, the grand was regulated, voices and tuned several times.

If I liked the sound and the feel and responsiveness, I'd probably take it -- but I've always liked Steinways, particularly the older ones!

Could you tell us more specific what has been restored, which parts are new?

If you decide to go for a newer B the Hamburg factory made very good pianos in the 1970´s.
