Bach French Suites
on: June 02, 2013, 11:16:26 PM
Do you think I would be able to play a Bach French Suite if I have played some of the Bach WTC? I have played the C major, C minor and E-flat major all from book one.  If i did, play a French Suite which one would be good to play first? I like no. 3 in particular.  I have also played all the Bach 2 part inventions and a few sinfonias.
Debussy Pour le Piano
Chopin Etude 10/5, 10/9
Beethoven Sonata 2/2, 10/3
Bach P&F no. 7 WTC 1
Ligeti Musica Ricercata 10

You should be fine. If you like No 3, start with it.

I also like the French Suite no. 2 a lot.  Which one do you think is better to play first, no. 3 or 2? Which is more technically difficult?

I think that if you were able to play the Eb prelude without any technical difficulty then you´ll be able to play any of the French Suites without problems.

Read through them both and see what you think. I'd have thought they were pretty similar in difficulty. Why not play them both? I think you're overestimating how difficult you will find them (or maybe you've struggled with the Bach you've done a lot).

I think I will start with the French Suite no. 2 first.  I looked at the score and I think it's manageable.  I like the allemande a lot :D

Also, are the English Suites more difficult than the French Suites?

I believe some people think so. I don't see it myself.  In any case, you can always do individual movements from a selection - it will build you up for the harder bits and you'll wind up with the lot.
