How the heck do you pronounce composers names?
on: June 04, 2013, 02:09:11 PM
Okay, so I was at a party the other da right?  And I got chastised for mispronouncing certain composers names.

So could like one of you make a video of you saying like a bunch of composers names?

Hi rachmaninoff_forever,

I have the same problem too. Your post prompted me to do a google search. The results came up with YouTube having videos of pronunciation. It was just awesome.

It is worth checking out, Joe.

P.S. There is a user that goes by "ireneismad". This was the best video I found there.

I just listen to WUOL-FM 4 or 5 hours a day.  Before that KLEF-FM in Houston.  Whatever pronunciation they use, that is right IMHO.  A cheap education, and sometimes I write pieces down to either buy on CD or LP, or even play.
WUOL streams on the web @ WUOL.org if you want to hear the last classical radio station in the southeast US (at least along I75 from Louisville to Jacksonville, anyway). They are a WFMT simulcast at night.
No high tech ****ese toys required.  Nobody died to produce this radio.  119 died yesterday, to produce the world's cheapest packaged chicken.  This radio was made in Philidelphia I believe, I inherited it from my Dad.

I once made a fool of myself with a way off the mark Schytte.

I thought it was pronounced Shite, but instead it is shooter.

Faure I got wrong for years.

Very useful, though the German seems to be more Bavarian than Prussian.

An alternative is to just look up the composer of choice on wikipedia, where there is a phonetic spelling and often a sound grab. Can't comment on the accuracy, though.

I personally take the "sin boldly" approach.

On another forum, the subject of Schytte went on for several pages.

Shoot was one of the suggestions if memory serves.

Thank you for the link.

I've always had problem with pronouncing some names... such as Janacek.  :-[
