Royal school vs Trinity
on: June 05, 2013, 02:27:03 AM
Hi, I have just started to learn the Piano at the age of 39. I was keen on the Trinity college program however my teacher says it is better for me (and my 2 daughters aged 5 &7) to do the Royal school of music program. Does anyone have any inputs on the differences and if one is preferred over the other? As beginners i guess it would all be the same, i would like to know going forward which one is considered better.

Hello, apscaps,

The curriculum should be very similar in both Colleges...
... but it could be perhaps easier for you to start at a College which is nearer to your home?

(...It might be sometimes a little inconvenient to travel a lot for just one lesson ...)

Whenever I can I love to attend Masterclasses/Concerts etc. at the Royal College of Music

and whenever I can I love to attend lectures at Trinity...

Good luck and best wishes for your decision from Kristina.

I believe OP means the grades/exams of the two systems, not actually attending the institutions.  ::)

@ apskaps - there's  not a great deal to pick between the two systems. I'd stick with the one your teacher knows, particularly if you are planning on you and/or your daughters taking grade exams. The knowledge you teacher has as to the standards required and possibly the quirks of the examiners will more than outweigh any difference in the two curricula.

P.S. When asking some music/piano students, I noticed that they seem to prefer wholeheartedly
the Royal Academy of Music, since many music students seem to prefer the high standard there...
so there you have the third option...

Good luck from Kristina  :)
